Grief doesn't follow a timeline.

It can look like tears, anger, exhaustion, quiet reflection, laughter, or simply getting through one more day. It can arrive suddenly, linger quietly, and change shape over time.

On National Grief Awareness Day, we’re reminded to make room for grief and to offer compassion to the people carrying it. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply be present and let someone know they don't have to walk through it alone.

Today, we're holding space for those who are grieving someone, something, or a chapter of life they've had to leave behind.

Happy National Dog Day to the unofficial coworkers of VOA! 🐾❤️

Today we're celebrating the dogs who make us smile between meetings, keep us company through long days, greet us like we're the most important person in the world, and somehow always know when we need a little extra comfort.

From office pups to program pets, we’re pretty lucky to have these four-legged members of the VOA family.

Today is Women’s Equality Day, and we’re thinking about one woman who helped shape the organization we are today: Maude Ballington Booth, our founder.
Maude believed deeply in the dignity and potential of people who were too often overlooked, and she devoted her life to creating pathways toward safety, opportunity, and a better future.

That same spirit continues through VOA today. We celebrate the women who have opened doors, the women walking through them, and the women making sure there are more doors open for those coming next. We're looking at you, Marilee Roloff and Fawn Schott!

Here’s to Maude, Marilee, Fawn, and to all the women who continue to move us forward!

Remember when we said Alexandria’s House was getting a beautiful renovation?
Well… the house had other plans.

In the process of upgrading this historic home, our contractors uncovered significant foundational damage underneath the front porch. If you’ve ever renovated a home, you already know what happened next: one step forward, two steps back, and suddenly the budget is having a very bad day.

The good news? We’re fixing it. The not-so-good news? The unexpected repairs have created a significant funding gap and pushed our completion date to mid-October.
Alexandria’s House is worth getting right. We’re looking for a little extra help getting across the finish line. If you’re able to contribute, we’d be incredibly grateful. And if you can’t donate, liking and sharing this post is a huge help, too. A huge shoutout to those who have already helped us bring this historical home up to code for our young families!

Every share helps us reach someone who might be able to help us turn this renovation plot twist into a happy ending.

Serving our community means supporting people where they are. ❤️

TJ Regalado shares one of the accomplishments he’s most proud of this year: integrating behavioral health into our workplace violence prevention program through EVADE. By building greater understanding around mental health and co-occurring disorders, we’re equipping our team with the knowledge and compassion to better support one another and the people we serve.

This is a heartbreaking time for our community. At VOA, we believe that home is more than a place. It is an anchor that we have built our organization around for decades. It is where families find safety, memories are made, and hope takes root.

Today, our hearts are with everyone who has lost a home, been forced to evacuate, or is facing uncertainty because of the devastating fires. We grieve alongside our neighbors and recognize the profound loss and disruption so many are experiencing.

At the same time, we are inspired by the strength and resilience that define our community. Across Spokane and the surrounding region, we are seeing people step forward to help one another, open their doors, offer support, and stand together in the face of hardship.

To those affected: you are not alone. We stand with you. We believe in the power of community, the importance of home, and the resilience of the human spirit. Together, we will support one another, rebuild, and emerge stronger.

From all of us at VOA, please stay safe, support your neighbors, and hold onto hope.
