INCLUSION
We want to create an equitable Gonzaga learning environment and social community for all. We will accomplish that through:
1.) Navigating the student to faculty, student to admin, and student to student relationships first and foremost (as described in our accountability and courage pillar)
2.) Continuing in our current roles to highlight and advocate for student work in terms of (passion projects, activism, and advocacy work)
Examples of this include:
- Supporting UMEC, DICE, and cultural clubs.
- Supporting movements like and empowering passionate Zags to put their ideas into practice.
- Demanding student voices be represented, shared governance be enacted, and student activism be welcomed.
3.) Attracting student voices, opinion, and involvement in policy making that affects the university as a whole.
Examples of this include:
-IMPACT: affinity group for hiring and retaining faculty/staff of color. We are in current contact with the three faculty heads of this group in how we can get students involved.
- Mandatory Implicit bias training and cultural fluency training for all faculty and staff: this is something that is already being considered by the administration in being implemented as soon as next year.
- Council of Equity, Inclusion and Intercultural Awareness: restructuring and retaining institutional power. We are represented in this council and have voting power.
- Supporting advisory councils pertaining to:
Presidents council, Academic council, Hemmingson Center advisory council, and the Rudolph Fitness Center advisory council. We want to increase visibility and student involvement in these councils that are the direct outlets for institutional change.
Gonzaga University still has a lot of work ahead in achieving Inclusion. Inclusion therefore, is not a tangible goal this year, but an overlying focus of our entire platform. The only objective form of information that our University has given us is the Campus Climate Survey which was started in 2017. We have not only based our full platform off of what this University needs, we have correlated our immediate plans with the needs this survey asks for.
If we are elected, we are dedicating ourselves to not only continuing to advocate for the promising work that our fellow peers have started, but empowering passionate Zags to truly be for and with others.
