My statement on the Spokane 3:

I remain shocked and deeply saddened. I believe justice and the rule of law failed us today.

As a lawyer, I am struggling to make sense of this. Our legal system is supposed to serve as a check on authoritarianism and unconstitutional government action. That is one of its most fundamental purposes. Today, it failed to do so.

I am also keenly aware that these defendants were targeted. They were targeted because they belong to vulnerable communities—because of the color of their skin, their identity, or both.

The only conclusion I can draw from this unjust and frightening verdict is that those of us with privilege have an even greater responsibility to speak out. We must continue to protest when we see constitutional rights violated. We must continue to show up when others are being targeted. We must refuse to look away.

If you have the privilege and ability to do so, please keep showing up.

Fascism wins when people are silent. It loses when people stand together.

Things we read about in Spokane. 😂

A marmot chewed through a Spokane-area homeowner's roof not once, but twice and even escaped from a trap before finally being removed by a wildlife control operator. The marmot was eventually relocated after confirming no babies were left behind in the attic, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

PSCH Committee Recap!

We had a full committee meeting this week focused on public safety, accountability, and community response efforts.

Chief Hall provided updates on the Safe and Accessible Public Spaces ordinance and ongoing SPD officer trainings.

We also welcomed our new Fire Marshal, Deputy Chief Rich Galtieri, who brings 33 years of fire service experience — including the last four here in Spokane. Thank you for your leadership and service, Rich!

One of the most impactful updates came from SFD’s CARES team and our Behavior Response Unit, who continue doing incredible work connecting people with services and support. Their work includes:
• 769 referrals from EMS providers
• 1,520 home visits
• 422 individuals and families connected to resources

Debbie Novak and Jim Leighty presented on SB 5974, a statewide bill establishing eligibility standards for sheriffs, police chiefs, and marshals.

Dillon introduced an ordinance aimed at increasing enforcement tools to deter aggressive speeding and street racing — an important step toward safer streets.

Finally, we received updates from our Regional Fire Authority and Safe & Healthy workgroups.

Feeling grateful to my husband, who is “not a runner,” for running Bloomsday with me. 1:26 is not bad for our first Bloomsday (actually running)and for him being in the OR until midnight last night. ❤️
