ATTENTION BULLDOG STUDENTS & FAMILIES

Here are a couple of important calendar updates for all students -

1) FOR THIS WEEK: May 12 and May 14 are approved as division scoring days for Civics and English Writing Performance Assessments. May 12 is a regular asynchronous day. On May 14, all students will be 100% distance learning and no students will be in the building. Classes will meet virtually at their regular times on May 14. However, English classes (all grades) and Civics classes will not meet at all due to the scoring by teachers, and these classes will be asynchronous on May 14 with teachers posting assignments for students.

2) Friday, May 21, is the FINAL DAY FOR STUDENTS TO SUBMIT WORK to their teachers for a grade.

SMS is looking for our next year's agenda cover! We are excited to announce that we are now accepting submissions for our agenda cover contest. Information on specifics to the agenda cover are included in the packet attached. One submission will be picked to be displayed as our 2021-22 agenda cover. Please use the Google Form included to submit your artwork. If your agenda cover is chosen, we will ask for your artwork so please hold on to it even though you are submitting it online. Please be sure to submit by Friday, March 12, 2021.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2021 IS NOW AN ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING DAY
As part of the State’s vaccine Phase 1b, SCPS teachers, bus drivers, and all staff are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We are excited to share that our partner in education, Mary Washington Healthcare is helping to support this effort and is able to begin vaccinating SCPS employees.
The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. To help ensure the greatest number of SCPS employees can be vaccinated, Tuesday, January 19, 2021, in addition to the typical Wednesday, will be an asynchronous learning day. Additionally, there will be no in-person instruction for Special Education Low Incident Programs on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

IMPORTANT UPDATE -
Yesterday evening, the Spotsylvania County School Board met and discussed the instructional delivery model for all schools, based on current data relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was decided that the CURRENT 100% DISTANCE LEARNING MODEL WILL BE EXTENDED AND WILL CONTINUE AT LEAST THROUGH THE END OF JANUARY.

The School Board has a scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 26. Plans are to revisit the data at that time, and make a decision on the instructional delivery model for SCPS students in February and beyond. Please stay tuned for any additional updates as decisions are made that affect the instructional delivery model at SMS.

Just a reminder that the end of the 2nd 9-weeks grading period is THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18. This Friday is an early release day, and classes will end at 11:45 a.m. for dismissal of any students in the building for in-person instruction.

All class assignments for the 2nd 9-weeks must be submitted to your teacher NO LATER THAN 12:00 NOON ON FRIDAY to be accepted and graded for inclusion with final calculations for the 2nd 9-weeks. Please make sure that your work in all classes is complete and turned in by this deadline. Be sure to contact your teacher ASAP if you have any questions about the end of the grading period.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR & MODEL CHANGES
The following changes are being made to the Instructional Calendar:
Monday, November 16 - CHANGE to FULL day of school
Monday, November 23 - CHANGE to asynchronous learning
Tuesday, November 24 - CHANGE to asynchronous learning
Having these two days asynchronous will provide a more flexible schedule as we transition into the Thanksgiving break. It will also provide an opportunity for each of our buildings to be thoroughly cleaned prior to the return from the holiday. It is important to note that transportation will not be provided on November 23 and 24 as students and teachers will be working virtually from home on those two days. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact your child's school.

Due to the schedule for fall student pictures during the week of November 16, the previously announced dates for our upcoming Spirit Week at SMS have been changed.

Spirit Week will now take place NEXT WEEK on November 9 through November 13. The schedule for next week's Spirit Week for students & staff will be as follows -

Monday, November 9 - Super Hero Day (dress up like your favorite super hero!)
Tuesday, November 10 - Jersey Day (wear a jersey of one of your favorite teams!)
Thursday, November 12 - Twin Day (coordinate with another student/staff & dress alike for the day!)
Friday, November 13 - Favorite Color Day (wear an outfit with your favorite color!)

The hybrid learning model will begin at SMS on this Monday, October 12, for the 2nd 9-weeks grading period. Each Monday & Thursday will be A days for students and each Tuesday & Friday will be B days for students (same as in the 100% distance learning model). Wednesday will remain an asynchronous day for students and staff to communicate, plan, and complete assignments. Daily attendance is still required on each Wednesday, but there will be required NO CLASS MEETINGS on Wednesdays.

Group assignments are available on Synergy in StudentVUE and in ParentVUE. Group 1 students will attend in-person on Monday & Tuesday, while Group 2 students will attend in-person on Thursday & Friday. Group 3 students are those families that have chosen to remain in 100% distance learning for the 2nd 9-weeks.

Buses will begin for in-person students in Group 1 and Group 2 for next week. The SCPS Transportation department has posted and communicated bus information for those students scheduled for a bus on their in-person school days during the hybrid learning model. Please check Synergy for bus information also. If you discover any issues OR have any questions on bus information, please contact the Transportation department @ 582-5125. Hotlines have been setup to field and answer any questions, and hotline personnel can be accessed at extension 1881, extension 1883, or extension 1884.

We look forward to seeing our Group 1 Bulldog students here in the building on this coming Monday. All other students should tune in from home for the Google class meetings. More reminders with information & details will be included in this week's update on Sunday evening.

Orientation for NEW 7th and 8th Grade Students

OPTIONAL IN-PERSON ORIENTATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW STUDENTS
SMS will offer optional in-person orientation sessions prior to the start of the hybrid learning model for all NEW students, including all 6th grade students. Orientation sessions should last no more than 30 minutes and will include a 15-minute tour. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, we are limiting group size to 12 students and no more than two parents/guests with each student. Orientation sessions will be held on this Wednesday, September 30, and also on Wednesday, October 7, at designated times. Attending families are asked to park in the side parking lot and enter the building, as directed, at the side entrance.
