David Goosman for Berkeley BOS

David Goosman for Berkeley BOS David is a retired USAF Officer with over 21 years in the service of his Country and now his County! Spotsylvania has been my home for over 24 years.

My wife Barbara and I have been blessed with more than 44 years of marriage, five wonderful children, and eight grandchildren (Twins on the way)—most of whom live right here in our beloved county. I proudly served our nation for 21 years as an active-duty United States Air Force officer. After retiring in 2002, I settled in Spotsylvania and continued public service—first as a Department of Defense

contractor commuting to Northern Virginia, and later for 15 years as a DoD civilian engineer at Quantico supporting the United States Marine Corps, retiring in December 2024. I’ve been honored to serve our community as Vice Chairman of the Spotsylvania Economic Development Authority, a member of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee, the Berkeley representative on the Transportation Committee, and a former Election Chief at the John J. Wright precinct. I also serve as a deacon, treasurer, and choir director at Calvary Baptist Church, where faith, family, and service guide my life. My background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering and a Master’s degree in Information Technology. From leading teams in Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan to serving our neighbors here at home, I bring proven leadership, experience, and a servant’s heart as I proudly serve the Berkeley District on the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors.

Today I took advantage of the beautiful weather and rode my motorcycle into the belly of the beast—up through Prince William and Loudoun Counties—to see their data centers for myself.

I have to say, words cannot adequately describe the sheer scale of what has been built there. The few pictures I took don’t come close to capturing the vast number of data centers spread across the landscape, nor the countless substations and transmission lines required to support them.

What was especially eye-opening was traveling the residential roads nearby and seeing how close many neighborhoods are to these facilities. While some may view them as progress, it reinforced for me the importance of thoughtful planning and reasonable limits.

As Spotsylvania continues to evaluate data center proposals, we need to have a serious conversation about what our long-term vision is. At one point, 15 million square feet of data center development was discussed as a potential threshold. Looking at where we stand today, I believe we may already be approaching that number.

If we don’t establish clear limits and a defined end-state, we risk becoming the next Northern Virginia. Growth should be intentional, balanced, and aligned with the character of our community—not something that simply happens one project at a time until it’s too late to turn back.

Today’s ride was educational, and it certainly gave me a lot to think about.

Today we honor and remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedoms. Their courage, selflessness, and love of country will never be forgotten.

We also lift up in prayer the families left behind who carry the weight of that sacrifice every day. May God bring them comfort, strength, and peace.

Freedom isn’t free. 🇺🇸

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
— John 15:13 (KJV)

Please take a moment today to remember our fallen heroes and the tremendous cost of liberty.
