“We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief.’
- Former President George W. Bush

As we embark on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 we invite you to join us at Company 1 (7200 Courhouse Commons Blvd) on Saturday, September 11 to pay tribute to the men, women, and children that lost and gave their lives. We will meet at 8:30 am and our moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 am when the first plane hit 20 years ago. During our time together, we will pray for the families and remember the victims of this tragic day in history.

We ask that you park in the parking lot of Mercy Hill Community Church next to the fire house and make your way over to the 9/11 memorial.

For all firefighters out there, every Tesla in the front trunk has a red cable tagged with a firefighter helmet, cutting this cable disconnects all the high voltage lines in the vehicle, and renders it motionless.

Today, members of our department were recognized by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce at their First Responders Appreciation Breakfast and Awards program.

On Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 1447 hours, Spotsylvania County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management units were dispatched to assist the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office with a distraught subject that had climbed a cell tower at Quail Ridge Products in the Massaponax area of the County. The Sheriff’s Office attempted to use their Crisis Negotiation Team in an effort to try and talk the subject down. Several hours passed without significant progress in negotiations with the subject. To further compound the situation, the ambient temperatures were dropping. It was noticed that the subject appeared to be physically drained and was struggling to maintain his grasp on the cell tower.

Being concerned about the subject’s wellbeing and the potential for significant injury should they fall, Battalion Chief Ray Richards made contact with the Incident Commander from the Sheriff’s Office to discuss an alternative plan. The plan was to position two of the fire department’s aerial ladders near the cell tower and then send several fire service personnel up the ladders to try and convince the subject to put on one of our rescue harnesses. Once in the harness the subject would be able to be secured to the cell tower in case he was no longer physically capable of hanging on himself. In addition, the crews were to take a sedative with them to potentially sedate the subject and coerce them to come down.

After the plan was reviewed and scrutinized for any potential pitfalls, Lt. Chris Graves, Lt. Darrin Clegg, Lt. Chris Pitts, Lt. Jeffrey D. Bailey and Fire Technician Norman Brooks, Jr. ascended the ladders and began talking to the subject. Initial attempts to have the subject put on the rescue harness were unsuccessful. They continued to talk to him and attempted to make a personal connection with him. Their persistence paid off and the subject finally agreed to put on the harness. Once the harness was on and the subject was secure, he was given the sedative. Within minutes the subject, obviously exhausted, asked if they would let him onto the ladder and take him down. Once down, he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The decision to utilize firefighters to assist with crisis negation led to a positive outcome on this call. Their efforts were later lauded by the Sheriff’s Office personnel that were on scene. Though crisis negotiation is not a typical part of our job, these individuals went above and beyond to live out the mission of our department to help others.

Pictured left to right are: Eric Fletcher (Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Chairman), Chief Cullinan, Technician I Brooks, Battalion Chief Richards, Lieutenant Pitts, and Lieutenant Clegg. Recipients not pictured are Lieutenant Chris Graves and Lieutenant J.D. Bailey.

The Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department is proud to be providing “File of Life” cards to the citizens of Spotsylvania County. The “File of Life” card is a quick and easy way for first responders to get needed medical information that may not otherwise be readily available due to the nature of the call. It provides life-saving information to include medications taken, current medical conditions, and emergency contact information. The “File of Life” magnet will display the SVFD logo. If any citizen determines that this information would be critical to the care of themselves or a loved one in Spotsylvania, please email [email protected]. Put “File of Life” in the subject line. In the body of the email list how many are needed and the name, address, and phone number for where they should be mailed. Cards may also be picked up at the Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management Office, 9119 Dean Ridings Lane, Room 2270, Spotsylvania, VA 22553. Citizens should fill out the form, in pencil, and place it on their refrigerator so that it is easily located. It is very important to keep the information up-to-date.

Have a great first day and stay safe!

As school is quickly coming to a start, the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office wants to remind our community the following:

- Stop and yield to pedestrians crossing at a crosswalk or intersection
- Never go around a school bus that has its lights activated and stop sign out
- Take extra care to look out for children
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians

We hope everyone has a wonderful school year!

SVFD’s Safety Officer, Captain Travis Prien, was honored today at a ceremony at the Ga***rd Hotel and Convention Center at National Harbor with the General James L. Jones Safety Award. Captain Prien is a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at Marine Corps Base Quantico serving as the installations Confined Space Program Manager for over 8 ½ years. He was recognized today by the Acting Secretary of Navy, Thomas J. Harker, for his efforts to build a personally designed state-of-the art Confined Space, Fall Protection, and Lockout/Tagout training simulator. From his award write-up: “As a testament to Mr. Prien’s thoroughness and attentiveness, his efforts directly minimized mishaps and saved the lives of two Marines who were moments away from entering a confined space with an oxygen level of 0.5% and explosive levels well above the allowable limits. If the Marines had of entered the confined space they would have been asphyxiated within seconds, resulting in their immediate death.” This simulator ensures all training exceeds federal, local and DoD requirements, and most importantly will protect the lives of over 500 employees. Chief Williams and his wife, Stephanie, were honored to attend the award ceremony along with Captain Prien’s wife, Brandy, his sister Angela and their father, Tom. Captain Prien has been a member of SVFD for almost 8 years and we are proud of the countless hours he dedicates to SVFD as the Safety Officer and Recruitment and Retention Officer. This award is a true testament of Captain Prien’s dedication to safety. Please join us in congratulating Captain Prien on this well-deserved award!

Had a great dinner out with my wife, Yvonne Buel Brazier, at Itavie Restaurant in the Courthouse Commons. And getting to see a bunch of our Career and Volunteer Firefighters and Officers dining outside there also.
So grateful that we got to see Santa from our driveway instead of needing to go to one of the local neighborhoods.

Hi there! Was wondering why Chancellor Green was left off of the schedule for the Santa truck? Every neighborhood surrounding ours is getting a visit, but not us? Or maybe I’m just totally missing it? I was under the impression we were part of Spotsy county volunteer FD’s jurisdiction but maybe I’m wrong. We would just miss seeing the truck this year, my kids always look forward to it. Thank you!
Just wanted to share a little story from my second grader; he thought I’d it on it’s own and wow what a cool fire truck too! Thank you for all you to firefighters for our communities!!!!! 😁
