As we get ready for the 4th of July celebration with family and friends, we urge you to remember that Elko County does not permit any fireworks. Random lighting of these can cause a wildland fire and endanger your home and someone's by you!

Also, please keep animals in mind. Dogs and livestock can be spooked by these and it is harmful to them!

Please go to the Marina and enjoy all the activities and food, then at dusk, enjoy the spectacular fireworks display they always put on!

Be safe!

It is with great sadness to express our condolences to the two brother firefighters in Couer d'Alene, Idaho who were killed by a gunman who lay in wait for them to arrive at a fire. Another brother is reported to be in stable condition after surgery.

We Pray for them all, their families and co-workers!

God speed, brothers, we have the watch from here!

all the fire departments in the county need help. We’ve heard all the excuses. I can’t commit to (fill in the blank), I’m not always available, I’m too young/old, I don’t know anything about it. They are just excuses. We are all volunteers. We can when we can and we can’t when we can’t.
This is an incredible job you get paid for in ways that aren’t money. If you’ve ever thought about it, contact the VFD in your area. The hardest part, is walking through that station door the first time.
We all live in the communities we serve. How can you make a difference?
Every fire department across the country needs help.

This is what is left of a residential 95-gallon trash cart after improper disposal of ashes!

This morning, Station 29 was called to the report of trashcans on fire in very close proximity of a residence and a propane tank. A-Shift responded in Engine 28 and quickly extinguished the fire before any extension to the home or other flammable materials.

These are 3 simple steps that can prevent an unnecessary tragedy:

1. DO NOT remove hot ashes from the fireplace immediately. Wait 2-3 days and let the ashes cool completely in the fireplace until there are no remaining hot embers before removing them.

2. NEVER put fireplace ashes in a combustible plastic trash container because it can easily ignite. If you have to remove the ashes from the fireplace before they are completely cool, put the ashes and remaining hot embers in a metal bucket. Move the bucket outside the house and garage well away from anything combustible and extinguish it with water.

3. ONLY put fireplace ashes in your combustible plastic trash container when they are completely cool and after you have put your trash container out on the street for trash pickup.

If your household uses a wood or pellet fireplace, it is equally important to have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a professional.
