Our busy week has continued.
At 0551 this morning, Box Alarm 53-11 was alerted for the barn fire in the 1900 block of Smith Station Road. Chief 53-1 arrived within 2 minutes of dispatch with a working fire and established the Command. Engines 79-2 and 79-3 ( Hanover Area Fire & Rescue ) arrived simultaneously, with 79-3 laying a 5 inch supply line back the lane and both crews initiating fire attack. Engine 53-2 arrived shortly thereafter and picked up 79-3's line and established nurse tanker operations. Engine 52-3 ( Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company ) arrived, sending the crew forward to assist with suppression while the officer was assigned as the water supply officer. Engine 52-3 and tankers 47 ( Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company ), 7 ( Lineboro), 11 ( Nashville) and 29 ( SAVES) all supplied 53-2 during the operation. Engine-Tanker 14 ( Irishtown), Tankers 12 ( North Codorus) and 20 ( Alpha of Littlestown) all were released prior to using their water as the successful fire attack knocked the fire down. Units cleared the scene just prior to 0900 hours.

At 1152 hours, Box 53-09 was alerted for an auto accident with injuries in the 6500 block of York Road, rte. 116. Upon response, Engine 53-1 and EMS units from 97-4 and 97-5 were advised of a tractor trailer that struck a pole and was in a field. Shortly thereafter, Officers from NYCRPD arrived and reported that the truck driver was having a medical issue. EMS and Engine 53-1 arrived to find a pole sheared off along 116 and a tractor trailer a great distance off the roadway. Crews worked together to treat the patient and remove him from the field. Engine 53-1 became disabled (stuck) while ensuring that the EMS units had a clear path to exit the field to transport the driver. The local farming community arrived quickly with a tractor and assisted the Engine out of the field. The driver was transported to a local hospital by EMS 97.
NYCRPD is investing both incidents.
As this note is being composed, Station 53 has been alerted to assist Station 52 ( Pleasant Hill) with a dumpster fire in West Manheim Township. Station 53 was canceled shortly after being dispatched.

It was a VERY busy day for the volunteers at Station 53.
As has been previously posted, we were blessed to train in an acquired structure. The dwelling, owned by The Looney Farm, is slated for demolition in the coming days. We drilled as a department on Monday the 17th. Today, we shared the blessing of realistic training with Friendship Hose Company #1 of Spring Grove, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company and North Codorus Twp. Fire Company. All three departments were able to run multiple scenarios such as attic and kitchen fires, vertical ventilation, forcible entry, positive pressure ventilation, victim rescue, scene size up and incident command, among others. The dwelling was repeatedly charged with simulated smoke (thanks to Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company for letting us borrow your smoke machine) for the scenarios.
Training in acquired structures is invaluable to refresh and sharpen skills as well as learning new ones.
While hosting the training, at 1303 hours this afternoon, Engine 53-1 was alerted to assist Station 4 with a gas leak inside in Spring Grove Borough. Engine 53-1 responded with a crew of 5 immediately from the training site. The crew staged until released.
The day was not over. Training scenarios continued, then at 1603 hours, Engine 53-2 was alerted on the Tanker Task Force assignment for Adams County Box 14-01, assisting Irishtown Fire Company with a working dwelling fire. A crew of 4 left the training ground and responded from the station with Engine 53-2 and on arrival, the crew was sent forward to assist with suppression while Engine 53-2 was utilized as a tanker and pumped off 1 load of water.
Once released, the crew returned to the training ground and helped cleanup. All personnel and apparatus then returned to the station and wrapped up the day.

After severe storms rolled through the area, Box Alarm 53-01 was alerted at 1710 hours for a residential structure fire in the 1200 block of Glatco Lodge Road in Heidelberg Township.
Additional information from York County 911 advised the caller reporting a tree down on his mother's house with smoke in the structure.
Due to the extremely high 911 call volume at the time, the Chief 360 (an app provided by York County 911 to all York County fire stations) pre-alert was received several minutes prior to the dispatch actually being made; due to the pre-alert, personnel were already in motion at the time of the dispatch.
Chief 53 arrived within less than a minute of dispatch reporting a tree down on the structure with no fire conditions evident from sides A, B or D and established the Command. Upon investigation, a tree had blown down onto the dwelling and struck the electric supply wires to the dwelling. The electric supply was ripped from the side of the dwelling, causing an apparent power surge that tripped multiple breakers in the dwelling and created a haze of smoke. The main breaker was turned off and the assignment was scaled back to 2 engines and 1 truck, keeping Engines 79-3 (Hanover Area Fire & Rescue) and 53-1 as well as Tower 79 on the assignment. 79 and 53 crews used thermal imaging cameras to assess for heat in the walls as well as gas meters to assess for possible propane leaks. With all readings negative, the box was placed in service.
