I visited Veteran’s Park this morning to take a moment out of the day to honor all of the current men and women serving in military service but to also remember those veterans who have served to protect our country. It is always sobering to stand at the memorial and remember those who suffered great harm or gave their life to protect this great nation. May we never forget that freedom is not free. Thank you to our SHPD employees who have served. We are also grateful to all of our veterans for their service!

Today, we honor and remember the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office held a memorial service on National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Police Chief Jim Sutterby, Capt. Adam Khan, and Sgt. Ned Godsey represented the City of Spring Hill at the memorial. Chief Sutterby read the proclamation recognizing National Police Week.

We thank our officers and all first responders who work every day to make our community safer.

Check out this beauty… with a smart message!

We wrapped our police truck with anti-drug and driving under the influence themes. The goal: to start conversations with your kids about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.

You can find the truck at upcoming community events, including Big Truck Day, car shows, and in the Fall Festival parade.

The police department paid for the education car wrap with the city’s Drug and Alcohol Funds – money that, in part, comes from alcohol sales taxes.

What a great way to kick off National Police Week!

Scarlett Hazelwood put on a badge as she became a Junior Chief of Police for the day. One decision she made was to allow a street closure, so residents could have a Fourth of July parade in their neighborhood.

The Wolf Creek Elementary student also took the police oath of office, signed a proclamation, met Norm, and had a police officer es**rt her to school!

We salute you, Chief Scarlett!

Yesterday I attended Advanced Policing Strategies training instructed by Dr. Tamara Herold at JCCC and hosted by Overland Park Police Department. Dr. Herold is a Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Texas State University. She has also served at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She is considered one of the leading experts in problem oriented policing and crowd psychology research. The training was exceptional and a rare opportunity to talk with such an expert in crime research. Dr. Herold discussed new ways to view how we use are data more effectively to problem solve crime and handle small and large crowd events in the community. I definitely took away key points that will help Spring Hill as we grow!

Gatlin Hanna is Spring Hill's new Police Chief! Well... Junior Police Chief for the Day!

Gatlin is a Wolf Creek Elementary student who recently won a raffle at the school.

This morning, he took the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor, signed a proclamation, toured the police station, ate donuts, and got to ride to school in a police car!

Congrats, Gatlin! What a fun first day on the job!
