The SBM Fire Department is excited to launch Legacy Lane, a new tradition dedicated to sharing the journeys that brought our members to where they are today.
Through Legacy Lane, we'll highlight the experiences, memories, mentors, and milestones that have influenced our members throughout their careers. By sharing our histories, we strengthen our connection to one another, honor those who came before us, and preserve the legacy of the fire service for future generations.
This week, we're proud to highlight one of our dedicated retirees who spent an incredible 21 years serving the community as an active firefighter with Station 4, Randy Krone.
When asked why he joined the fire service, his answer was simple: "It's being a fireman—do I need to say more?" Beyond the excitement and challenge of the job, he was driven by a desire to help his community and make a difference when people needed it most.
Over the course of two decades in the fire service, he responded to countless emergencies, but a few stand out above the rest. One memorable call involved a lightning strike that hit a home, traveled through the electrical wiring, and exited through a light fixture directly above a couple's bed. After crews completed their work, the husband—well into his 80s—looked at his wife and joked, "That was the most excitement this bed has had in a long time." It's moments like these that remind us that humor can be found even in the most unexpected situations.
As for major incidents, the Williams Pipeline fire remains near the top of his list as one of the most significant fires he experienced during his career.
When reflecting on his favorite part of being a firefighter, he points not to the calls, but to the people. The camaraderie, friendships, and opportunity to serve alongside an amazing group of individuals made the experience truly special.
His advice for today's firefighters is one that resonates throughout the fire service: "Remember this is a brotherhood. We should support each other in any way we can, and also allow others to support you when needed. This support makes us stronger individually and builds a strong team."
Thank you for your 21 years of dedication, service, and commitment to the fire service. Your impact continues to be felt throughout our department and community- we’re so lucky to have you on Fire Corps!
