A message from Executive Director Ward regarding the low temperatures:

As low temperatures come into our area, we should be mindful of some things we can do to reduce the chances of pipes freezing.

• If in doubt, leave your water running slightly inside your house nearest to where the water line enters the house. Just a trickle should be sufficient.
• Unlike some systems, ours is healthy enough to handle a slightly running faucet. SWU can handle the flows.
• Do not shut off your water unless you absolutely have to. Water can get trapped in your pipes and still freeze.
• Make sure your crawl spaces under your house have entrance doors closed or blocked that access your crawl space.
• Close your garage door. Many pipes freeze when a garage door is left open and or is not heated.
• If possible, provide safe, low temp heat in an unheated garage or attic space where pipes may be.
• Remove water hoses from outside faucets to prevent hoses from cracking.
• If you are concerned about your meter freezing in your box, place a bag of top soil or other loose material in a bag or other insulating material over the lid.
• If you have water loss, please call 479-751-5751 and we will dispatch personnel as soon as safely possible to determine if it is an SWU issue or a customer issue.
• Fill some containers with water and keep inside the house in case efforts to prevent freezing fail.

Above all, be safe. Thank you.

As temperatures dip below freezing, it’s important to take the proper precautions to prevent pipes in your home from bursting. Springdale Water Utilities (SWU) has some recommendations for what you can do to help protect your home:

Winterize your outdoor faucets and remove hoses.

Drain outside lines if possible.

Keep your garage door closed.

Turn off your seasonal meter or winterize PRV’s or RPZ’s.

If you have a crawl space, insulate access doors, seal cracks, and insulate pipes.

If you are not confident with your measures, you may leave a little water running in the sink or tub nearest where the service line enters the house.

Make sure your meter box is closed and not open.

If you have pipes in your attic, make sure you have them insulated or the area SAFELY heated. A pipe bursting in an attic is much more costly and messy than ones under the house.

Check your homeowner’s policy, or check with your agent, to make sure you are covered if you do inadvertently have a pipe burst.

The homeowner or property owner is responsible for damages or leaks on their side of the meter. Burst pipes are expensive to repair, so take steps to prevent the problem.

If you need help determining the source of your water loss, SWU can be contacted, however we do not make home repairs or thaw residential lines if that is the problem.

For more information about what you can do to prevent pipes from bursting in your home, please contact SWU at 751-5751.
