We would like to wish you a Happy Halloween and share our hope for safe trick or treating. Unfortunately, 26 of our members were ordered in to work today due to our continued staffing crisis. If you see a firefighter come to your door tonight let them know we’re hiring.

Below is a visualization of the number of times Fire Fighters in Prince George’s County were forced into work on their regular day off, in the months of August and September. Our Fire Fighters have shown up time and time again, no matter what plans they had made. Each fire helmet represents a child’s missed birthday, wedding anniversary, or simply the day off that was supposed to be guaranteed by their contract. Last year this Local sounded the alarm at the 30,000 hours of mandatory overtime placed on the backs of Fire Fighters. August and September saw 12,816 hours of mandatory callbacks alone. Our Fire Fighters have waited patiently for their relief, only to see none come. Our Fire Fighters have seen 130 mandatory overtime shifts this past weekend alone. How much longer must our Fire Fighters wait for relief?

History

As a part of the Prince George’s County master plan for facilities, Fire Station 806 was opened officially in October 2010. The station was opened to service an area of the county that needed better response times.

Fire Station 806 is comprised of full-time, professional firefighters. Currently, it is home to the following units: Duty Chief, Battalion 881, Engine 806, Rescue Squad 806, Ambulance 806, Paramedic Ambulance 806, and the Northern EMS Duty Officer. Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Dept. operates a 4-shift system. Fire Station 806 has 11 personnel working each shift.

Fire Station 806 is also home of the Department’s technical rescue team. Technical rescue refers to the aspects of saving life that employ the use of tools and skills that exceed those normally reserved for emergency medical services or firefighting. Station level personnel spend hundreds of hours of training in the following areas: Structural collapse, swiftwater, trench rescue, rope rescue, and confined space.
