Burke Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol

Burke Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol We are a Civil Air Patrol composite squadron with both Cadets and Senior Members focused on Emergency Services, Aerospace Education & Cadet Programs.

We are an active squadron with opportunities for cadets and senior members to learn, achieve, and serve our local community. The Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Burke Squadron is a unit of the Virginia Wing, Middle Eastern Region . It meets Thursdays at Washington Irving Middle School, 8100 Old Keene Mill Springfield, VA 22152. Springfield at 7pm. The squadron welcomes all interested persons age 12 and above. There are presently 12 cadets and 21 senior members in our unit ranging in age from 12 to 71. As a composite squadron (one with both cadets and senior members) we focus on all three of the basic Civil Air Patrol missions: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs and Emergency Services. There are also staff and command functions performed by cadets and senior members. Members can choose roles in any or all of these programs including Aircrew, Emergency Services and Mentors to cadets. It is not unusual for members to choose more than one specialty area.

Mission: To serve America by development of our Nation’s youth; accomplishing local, state and national emergency and humanitarian missions; and educating our citizens on the impact of aviation and space.

Thanks to all the Burke Members that have participated in making Microsoft Teams work for our squadron. Capt Julie Demyanovich is pictured in this article from her work at the Manassas Warehouse Distribution Mission. Great Teamwork.

“I am very proud of the responsiveness and quick reaction of the Virginia Wing to make these missions happen during a difficult time. Thanks to Teams, people don’t have to drive to get to a command post…. I can orchestrate missions from Teams running on my iPhone.”
-Col. Dean Gould, Virginia Wing Commander. Col. Gould shared with Microsoft during an interview the successes of Teams in Virginia Wing and more - check out the story here: https://customers.microsoft.com/en-us/story/849314-civil-air-patrol-virginia-wing-case-study-nonprofit-microsoft-365

America Returns to the Moon

For the first time since the Apollo era in the early 1970’s, America is preparing to land a spacecraft on the surface of the moon. Now being built by a company in Pittsburgh named Astrobotic, the Peregrine lunar lander is on track to become the vanguard in a long series of lunar missions, both robotic and human. That landing slated for the second half of 2021 will open a new era in space flight that will see our nearest celestial neighbor become a hub of permanent human activity. Burke Composite Squadron of the Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol hosted Astrobotic’s Mission Director, Mr. Bhaskaran on October 7, 2020 where he presented a fascinating look ahead at this history-making space flight. Following the meeting cadets and seniors from across the Mid Atlantic Region took part in a Q&A session that answered many of the questions you may have.

Over the weekend, nine Virginia Wing members from five different units came together to continue supporting food warehouse operations for Prince William County. Between Saturday and Sunday, members moved and processed nearly 52,000 pounds of food resulting in 29,000 meals. Additionally, members from three different units ensured the safety and well-being of these members utilizing the wing’s virtual incident command post from nearly 180 miles away from the operation. How do you know when to shelter from a tornado, evacuate from a flood threat, or shelter-in-place during a hazardous materials spill? You must receive the Fairfax Alerts emergency message from public safety officials! 2020 has made it clear that large emergencies and disasters are possible here in Fairfax County, so our mission to sign up at least an additional 17,000 residents closely aligns with the National Preparedness Month campaign in September.

Fairfax Alerts is a local-opt in system that allows you to receive weather, traffic, and emergency alerts via text, email, and/or call based on your registered address. The system allows for you to choose what type of alerts that you are interested in, as well as how you wish to receive them. This personalization ensures that you are notified of the information you wish to receive, as well as how you wish to receive it. You can also add in multiple addresses, such as a work or school address in the county. This ensures that you receive alerts at home, work, or school.

Sign up for alerts here: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/alerts

We encourage our volunteers and residents to “Touch 10” by signing up for the system and then passing this message and digital outreach postcard to 10 other Fairfax County residents. Let’s see how many new sign-ups we can achieve during September!

Virginia Wing Members Continue to Support Food Distribution Efforts

Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Virginia Wing continues to provide support for Prince William County’s distribution of necessary resources having been tasked this past week at the request of Prince William County and Meals on Wheels.

As part of a growing connection with Prince William County’s COVID-response efforts, three senior members and nine cadets met at Manassas, Virginia, to aid in the transfer of food supplies to storage spaces to prepare for distribution to the public. Working with Manassas Senior Center staff and Prince William Parks and Recreation, Virginia Wing members participated in the unloading and storage of hundreds of packages of food items which will be used to make thousands of meals for the localities of Manassas and Prince William County.

The senior center’s staff, working with Meals on Wheels, expressed gratitude for the amount of support CAP members were able to provide.

The team then moved to Woodbridge, where additional aid was requested to unload and store packages that will be used to prepare an expected amount of over 1,500 meals.

Additional support is expected as part of the growing relations with county support systems throughout the Commonwealth and relief efforts continue in food distribution centers.

Civil Air Patrol acts as a longtime auxiliary of the U.S Air Force and as such is a valued member of its Total Force. Civil Air Patrol is aligned with the First Air Force to rapidly respond to non-military threats domestically. CAP’s 66,000 volunteer members perform homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state, and local agencies.
