This year marks the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the effective end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in the state were free.

Yesterday, I joined Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, members of the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, and colleagues from across the Commonwealth for a Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony at the State House.

Today, we continue that celebration in Mason Square, honoring the resilience, culture, and contributions of Black Americans here in Springfield and across our nation.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder of our shared responsibility to continue advancing equity, opportunity, and justice for all.

Happy Juneteenth.

Today, we celebrated two important milestones for Springfield and Western Massachusetts: the groundbreaking for the new School of Health and Patient Simulation at Springfield Technical Community College and the extraordinary leadership of President John Cook.

This investment will help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals while strengthening our regional workforce and economy.

Thank you, President Cook, for a decade of dedicated service to STCC and for your unwavering commitment to expanding opportunity for students across our community.

The future of healthcare education in Springfield is bright.

This afternoon in Chicopee, we came together to honor Juneteenth with a flag raising ceremony recognizing the end of slavery in the United States and celebrating freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

Juneteenth is both a moment of reflection and a call to action—to remember our history honestly and to continue working toward a more equitable future for all communities.

Grateful to everyone who joined today and helped lift up this important day across the Commonwealth.

Technology plays a critical role in how schools educate students, communicate with families, and deliver essential services every day. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is critical that our schools have the tools and infrastructure needed to protect sensitive information and maintain safe, reliable operations. This investment in the Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence will help strengthen cybersecurity protections, support educators and staff, and ensure students can continue learning without disruption. I am grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration for recognizing that investments in school cybersecurity are investments in educational opportunity and for ensuring Springfield students and families have the resources they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

State Senator Adam Gómez (D-Springfield) is applauding the Healey-Driscoll Administration's announcement that the Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence has been selected to receive funding through the Commonwealth's first-ever Cybersecurity Remediation Grant Program.  Admini
