Update as of 6pm on 05/19/26- Mateo is getting stronger but not out of the woods yet. It is best for him to stay at animal emergency clinic until at least Thursday to receive supportive care and continued to be monitored. He is still very weak and needs help getting up and down. His medical bill continues to grow because the good care he is receiving. We want to thank the people that have been able to donate towards his bill. The bill at this time is up to $2500.00. So if you are able to help please donate to the shelter or you can also pay straight towards his bill at Animal Emergency clinic. Thank you

Update as of 7:25am on 05/15/26- Sweet puppy Mateo is still fighting. They were able to get the imbedded collar out but he is still pretty painful. He tried to eat this morning but ended up being pretty nauseous and vomiting. He also is having trouble keeping his temp regulated so he is going to stay there and we will check back in with them later today. This poor thing is one sick puppy 😥. Please keep praying for him to make a full recovery.

Update as of 1:07pm- Mateo is holding strong and Animal Emergency Clinic is taking good care of him. X-rays don’t show any broken bones from being bumped by car so that is good. They are now going to surgically remove the imbedded collar they said he may have some nerve damage as the collar is very imbedded but it is too soon to tell at this time. They are going to keep him overnight tonight.

💥💥Warning 💥💥

Graphic picture in this post!

One of our ACO’s was just called out to pick up this poor puppy that has a severely imbedded collar in his neck and was bumped by a car when he ran out in the street. The occupants of the car stopped to help him and contacted local police immediately. Thank you so much to them for doing that.

He is now on his way to AEC to try to save his life. Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center continues to try and help animals like this when we can. This can be very costly so we ask that you please share this and donate if you can. You can either donate to our shelter directly by calling or coming by or you can call or go by the Animal Emergency Clinic and put money towards this pups care there. We are going to call him Mateo which means “gift of god”.

Once Mateo is stable and able to be released we will be looking for a foster home to help him continue to heal and care for him to avoid him having to come into the shelter with healing injuries.

He is now on 3 day stray hold and we are going to conduct an investigation so we are looking for any information as to who may have owned this pup. Please call us with any info you may have during our regular business hours or you can also put an anonymous tip in through crimestoppers. Thank you ❤️🐾🐾❤️.

🚜🐾 HELP WANTED: Two Hardworking Heelers Looking for a Job! 🐾🚜

Meet our dynamic duo of heelers Mike and Ike who are currently searching for more than just a home — they’re looking for a PURPOSE! Heelers are intelligent, energetic working dogs that are happiest when they have room to run, jobs to do, and livestock (or at least lots of activity) to keep an eye on.

🌾 Dream Home Requirements:
✔️ Farm, ranch, or large property
✔️ Active lifestyle
✔️ Experience with herding/working breeds preferred
✔️ Plenty of mental and physical stimulation

These two are loyal, smart, and ready to clock in for duty. Whether it’s helping move cattle, supervising chores, or simply being your right-hand ranch dogs, they are eager to put their heeler instincts to work.

They are not couch potato dogs — they are the “ride shotgun on the tractor and follow you everywhere” type. ❤️🐶

If you’ve been looking for a pair of hardworking companions with endless devotion and personality, these two may be exactly what your farm has been missing.

They do not have to be adopted together by any means just showing them both off together!

📩 Contact us at Sangamon County Animal Control and Adoption Center to meet them or learn more about adoption. Please share to help these deserving dogs find the country life they were born for! 🌾🐕
