We are receiving a number of complaints about telephone scams claiming to be from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the victim they have missed a court date or didn’t attend a mandatory jury summons. As a result, the scammer tries to leverage money from the victim. They will use coercion tactics such as avoiding an arrest, jail time, or higher fines.
Typically, these scammers are using VoIP phone numbers. A VoIP (or Voice over Internet Protocol) number is basically a virtual phone number. You can purchase these numbers over various websites or applications. Scammers/Cybercriminals have found a way to leverage VoIP technology to carry out a new type of scam where they can make phone calls over the Internet, pose as a legitimate business, and request for personal and financial information. The following phone numbers are those that have been reported by recent victims claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office:
(217)764-8719
(217)599-5663
These phone numbers are VoIP based and are NOT legitimate numbers for the Sheriff’s Office. If you ever receive a phone call claiming to be from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, don’t call them back on the number they give you. If you get a phone call from a Deputy, call Sangamon County Dispatch at (217)753-6666. If you get a call from a Detective, call (217)753-6840. If you get a call from a State’s Attorney, call (217)753-6690. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER request or demand money over the telephone under any circumstances.
Additionally, you can always refer to our contact page on our website at https://www.sangamoncounty-sheriff.com/contact-us/ and the Sangamon County website https://co.sangamon.il.us/

Telephone scams are circulating again in which the caller purports to be “Sgt. Owens” with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. The caller tells the victims they have a warrant for their arrest, and then demands money from the victim to clear up the matter. In some cases, they also claim to have a friend or family member currently under arrest. They claim that bail/bond needs to be paid or attorney fees are necessary to prevent further criminal charges.
There is no “Sgt. Owens” that works for the Sheriff’s Office, and we would never request or demand money over the telephone under any circumstances.
We would like to remind the public to exercise caution when answering phone calls from unknown callers, and never give out personal or financial information over the phone without first verifying the caller’s identity and information.

🆕 Update 5/2: Interstate 55 in Sangamon and Montgomery counties has reopened in both directions.
On Saturday, April 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office hosted a Drug Takeback Day at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health Building at 2833 South Grand Avenue East, Springfield. The results were as follows:
-50 lbs. collected at The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. This was collected over several months.
-60.5 lbs. collected on 4-22-23 at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health building.
Total 110.5 lbs. collected by SCSO.
Medicine take back options are the best way to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription and nonprescription (for example, over the counter) medicines. (Illegal drugs are not permitted) Timely disposal of prescription medicine can reduce the risk of others taking the medication accidentally or misusing the medication intentionally. The best and most environmentally friendly way to dispose of your prescription medicine is through a drug take-back program.
Thank you to all who participated in the program. Please watch for the next event.
