Press Release 10/6/2023

On Monday, September 25th, the Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, began to investigate Heinz Funeral Home / Family Care Cremations in Carlinville after learning a deceased woman had been left in a hospital morgue for almost a month. This is after the family had been provided assurance from Heinz Funeral Home that their loved one had been picked up, cremated, and cremains were provided to the family.

This, along with other complaints, led our office to respond to the funeral home in question on September 28th, where we discovered the remains of three individuals in an advanced state of decomposition. Those individuals were removed from the funeral home, taken back to Sangamon County, and were properly identified by Coroner Allmon. All three individuals were Sangamon County residents who had died in Sangamon County the month prior. All three of those families have been located and notified.

Since the start of this investigation, we have removed or recovered over 40 sets of cremains from Heinz Funeral Home, some of which were not labeled at all.

To date, the Coroner’s Office has received dozens more sets of cremains from families that were given the wrong cremains. Over the last week, the Coroner’s Office has fielded hundreds of calls.

Through these calls, the Coroner’s Office has learned that these are not isolated incidents that occurred just in Sangamon County. This investigation involves multiple jurisdictions, and coroners and law enforcement agencies of several counties are now receiving calls.

As this investigation moves forward, the Coroner’s Office will continue to work with families to return their loved ones to them when possible. Coroner Allmon will also work with the Illinois Department of Public Health, Vital Records Division to file and correct/amend death certificates when appropriate. Yesterday our office was notified that the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations revoked the license of August Heinz of Heinz Funeral Home / Family Care Cremations. The Sangamon County Coroner supports this decision and will refer any questions about any criminal culpability to the law enforcement agencies investigating this matter.
