It's day one of Tremendicon! A portion of proceeds benefits Ozarks Food Harvest. We're so grateful to the folks who run this fun and generous event in Springfield, MO.

The end of the school year has us thinking about all of the student field trips to our Food Bank Farm this summer ❤️ Our staff love coordinating these field trips because the lessons taught are so important. When students visit the farm, they learn about agriculture, healthy diets and the importance of helping our neighbors access food.

Many of these field trips are from Springfield Public Schools, Springfield, MO, and SPS Farm to School Coordinator Kendall Slaughter shared what he loves about this partnership.

Today marks 15 years since the city of Joplin was hit by a devastating EF5 tornado. Families lost access to food, housing and crucial resources for weeks, and the loss and destruction was so historic that it garnered national attention.

Within the first week after the 2011 tornado, Ozarks Food Harvest processed more than 1 million pounds of food and supplies, which would have normally taken us a month to distribute at that time. For three months, we were sending semi-trucks of food to Joplin daily, and our trucks continued to deliver to Joplin weekly one year later. Those efforts required a lot of food, manpower, and food and fuel costs. They absolutely could not have happened without support from generous individuals, local businesses, and even folks from across the country.

This anniversary reminds us of the importance of coming together to support each other through our most difficult times. Ozarks Food Harvest responds to the disaster of hunger in southwest Missouri every day with help from volunteers, donors and community partners — but our generous community also makes it possible to respond to unexpected disasters in our service area.

As always, we're filled with gratitude for everyone who makes it possible for Ozarks Food Harvest to be a stable, reliable source of help when our neighbors need food. Whether a neighbor is recovering from a natural disaster or needs help to make ends meet, we're here to support our hunger-relief network and help folks access nutritious meals right here in southwest Missouri.

Thank you for helping us Transform Hunger into Hope in southwest Missouri ❤️

We're proud to announce that the recipient of our sixth annual Golden Gleaners Award is Amanda Tune! The award is given each year to a volunteer who has shown outstanding contribution to Ozarks Food Harvest's Full Circle Gardens program, and Amanda fits the description perfectly.

Amanda began volunteering with us while she still had children at home and worked full time. After her retirement, she started volunteering at the garden regularly. Today, she's reached nearly 250 volunteer hours with the Full Circle Gardens program and over 600 total volunteer hours with Ozarks Food Harvest!

Here's what Alexa, director of Full Circle Gardens, had to say about Amanda, "Amanda is so welcoming and kind, and we're thrilled to have her volunteer with us. She's eager to help in any way she can and has even recruited her husband, Scott, who now volunteers with us as well!"

Amanda also shared why she volunteers with Ozarks Food Harvest, saying, "I truly enjoy volunteering at Ozarks Food Harvest's Full Circle Gardens because of the amazing staff and fellow dedicated volunteers. Working alongside people who share a passion for helping others makes every moment rewarding, and knowing the gardens and partner gleans help provide fresh food to those in need gives the experience a true sense of purpose."

A huge thank you and congratulations to Amanda for this much-deserved award!

Other than all of the meals our community raises for children and families facing hunger, our favorite part of Food Fight is celebrating with the winning schools.

This food and fund drive runs on the power of community. Thank you to SPS students and staff, their community partners, and everyone who helped make this a record-breaking year for Food Fight!

Another thank you to presenting sponsor Rapid Robert's Inc. for a record-breaking year and their continued support of this event!

To celebrate National Plant Something Day, we're reflecting on our Plant it Forward plant & seed distribution we held this past Friday. Thanks to donations from local farmers and businesses, 119 households got to take home free plants, seeds and fertilizer to grow their own food!

We heard all kinds of stories about how these plants would make a difference for you! We heard about folks rebuilding their gardens after the April hail storm, Boys & Girls Clubs boosting their teaching gardens, families growing their own produce to reduce grocery costs, and neighborhoods starting community gardens to support their neighbors.

Thank you so much for sharing your stories with us. We'd love to see how you use these fruits and vegetables, so feel free to post and tag us when you get your gardens going!

Local organizations like City of Springfield, MO Environmental Services, Master Gardeners of Greene County, Springfield, MO, Mizzou Extension - Family Nutrition Education, Springfield-Greene County Library District, and our own SNAP outreach coordinator were also there to provide education and activities on how to access resources and make the most of our gardens.

Special thanks to these plant and seed donors for making the event possible:
Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.
Edges Wild Farm
Pesto for All
Fassnight Creek Farm
MSU Greenhouse
Republic High School Greenhouse
Family Through Faith
C&H Plants
Stine Family Farm
