Health Care Council of Illinois - HCCI

Health Care Council of Illinois - HCCI The Health Care Council of Illinois (HCCI) is the strong, leading voice for nursing home communities across the state.

HCCI strives to bridge the divide between state policy makers and nursing home communities through education and advocacy. Illinois must rein in state spending to solve our financial crisis, but we must protect funding for nursing homes. Holding the line will ensure:

Residents have quality care, food and home-like surroundings. Staff have fair wages and a good work environment. Families can depend on nursing homes to care for their loved ones.

HCCI is pleased to announce our September Long-Term Care Hero of the Month is Sergio Salazar Montesinos, Housekeeping Aide at Alden Estates of Northmoor!

Sergio's colleagues say he radiates positivity, even when the day is hard, and takes initiative when he sees a problem. He goes above and beyond for staff, residents, and their families. When a visitor pulls into the parking lot with a flat tire, Sergio is the first person to offer help. When residents overestimate their own physical abilities, he steps up and helps any way he can. Sergio is a natural leader who works to set a good example for his team every day. He is diligent and deliberate in the way he moves throughout the facility. Sergio holds people accountable for their work, but is always willing to slow things down for a teachable moment.

Sergio was celebrated at an award presentation this week surrounded by his colleagues. Members of Alden leadership, including CEO and HCCI Board Member Bob Molitor, offered their words of congratulations.

We commend Sergio for his exemplary dedication and compassionate service to long-term care.

“Some of these facilities are at a point where they will have to decide what to do with their operation. There may be layoffs of clinical and non-clinical staff, or there may be closures."

Nursing homes in Cook County pay approximately six times the property taxes as nursing homes in all other counties in Illinois. To prevent reduced access to care and job losses, we urge legislators to support an equitable tax system for nursing homes.

HCCI is proud to announce our June Long-Term Care Hero of the Month, Patty Barnes!

Patty has worked in the skilled nursing industry for more than 40 years and is the current CEO/Administrator of Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a Crest Healthcare facility, in Virden. She led Sunrise for 39 years before embarking on what turned out to be a temporary four-year retirement. Patty returned to the facility during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic and took up the reins of leadership once again to help a community in need. Offering her vast knowledge and skill set at such a challenging time was something she felt compelled to do.

Treasured by the staff and residents of Sunrise, Patty excels in her leadership role. She treats the staff as family, with all members working toward the common goal of making the facility the best it can be. Patty not only takes pride in providing excellent hometown care, but ensures everyone working at Sunrise accepts that responsibility and understands its importance. Her colleagues say she is gifted at taking care of people, each according to their individual needs, and making them feel special and important.

A special thank you to State Senator Steve McClure, staff of State Representative Wayne Rosenthal, Virden Mayor George Murphy, WAND-TV, and the Virden Recorder/Girard Gazette for taking part in our award presentation.

Congratulations to Patty on this well-deserved honor! We thank her for not only making a profound difference in the lives of the employees and residents at Sunrise, but on the skilled nursing industry as a whole.
