Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois

TRS provides retirement, disability and survivor benefits to teachers, administrators and other public-school personnel employed outside of Chicago.

Serving more than 462,000 members. TRS members fall into the following categories: active, inactive, annuitant, and beneficiary. Active members are all full-time, part-time, and substitute Illinois public school personnel employed outside the city of Chicago in positions requiring licensure by the Illinois State Board of Education. Persons employed in certain state agencies and statewide or nation

al organizations related to education also are active TRS members. Inactive members are no longer contributing to the System but have service credit that will entitle them to draw a benefit or refund when statutory eligibility requirements are met. Annuitants are persons receiving a retirement annuity or disability retirement annuity. Beneficiaries are persons receiving a survivor benefit or reversionary annuity.

TRS has reached an exciting milestone: 300+ full-time employees.

“Two of our five strategic goals are centered on our people, because we recognize that achieving our mission depends on attracting, developing and retaining outstanding staff,” said Stan Rupnik, TRS executive director and chief investment officer.

Over the past four years, TRS has grown by nearly 80%, reflecting a deliberate investment in talent and the capabilities needed to support a growing and evolving organization. Workforce growth is one element of our long-term strategy to strengthen and enhance service to members.

"Ultimately, all of these investments, whether in people, technology or organizational infrastructure, are about building a stronger institution that is well positioned to serve our members for decades to come," said Rupnik.

We are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton, a legendary entertainer and devoted advocate for children’s literacy.

Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, millions of books have reached young readers, including children and families in 91 of Illinois' 102 counties, helping expand access to books and early literacy opportunities for children during their most important years of development. Her commitment to literacy, learning and opportunity will continue to shape the lives of future generations.
