Prepare, Plant, Scout

After weeks of no rain, we gardeners have received - and continue to receive - almost daily rainfall. I am thankful for the rain and that I was able to prepare the soil, plant green beans and set out tomatoes, peppers, and a lone eggplant before this rainy period. I have learned that plants that remain wet from rainfall or overhead watering are more susceptible to disease than plants that enjoy dry periods between rains and/or receive water by irrigation at the soil level. So, the scouting begins!

The 2026 Tennessee Home fruit and Vegetable Calendar notes for May include helpful suggestions on getting started with scouting. Gardeners must observe the symptoms, identify the cause, and act to prevent the negative impacts of insects, diseases, and weeds.

Go to comments for more information and the link to the calendar.

The May Volunteers of the month are Marissa Lemley Brown and Adam Brown! They are passionate supporters of the 4-H program, with a long-standing commitment that truly sets them apart. Adam and Marissa met through Tennessee's 4-H program! Marissa has been attending 4-H Camp since 1996, and in some years has even given her time to attend and support more than one 4-H camp. Adam started attending as an adult leader. Marissa is deeply involved in her community, actively participating in her FCE group and serving on County Council. They both generously volunteer their time with the Clover Buds program, working with our K–3rd grade members to help foster a positive introduction to 4-H in the future. They both are highly involved in our Robertson County Fair, working in the photography section and making sure everything is perfect before the fair opens.
Thank you for all you do for the Robertson County 4-H program, Brown Family!

Begin Looking Now for Rose Rosette Disease

Early spring is a good time to start looking for roses rosette disease (RRD) in rose plantings. While emerging shoots of rose normally appear reddish in color before turning green, shoots of roses infected with RRD are bright red, Rose leaves on the new shoots are stunted and twisted.

Rose rosette disease was described in roses beginning in the early 1940’s. The rose rosette virus was confirmed as the pathogen in 2011. The disease is spread by a tiny eriophyid mite.

I suspect that one of the roses in my home landscape has RRD. I received a call today from a homeowner concerned because one of several rose plants in her home landscape is displaying RRD symptoms.
