Today, at approximately 2:32pm, Buffalo, Mechanicsburg and Dawson units were dispatched to a single vehicle accident in the eastbound lanes on I-72 near mile marker 115. The rain during this time made conditions unfavorable on scene, especially being on the side of the interstate. Upon arrival, all units strategically parked their emergency vehicles and got to work.
While members were providing patient care, a vehicle not related to the original accident was traveling past the scene and struck one of the engines parked on the interstate. Thankfully, there were no first responders near the truck at this time. Passengers of that vehicle suffered minor injuries and no first responder was injured during the crash.
This sort of accident is completely preventable and easily could have been much worse. Scott's Law, also known as the "Move Over Law", is a mandatory move over law in the state of Illinois to help protect first responders who are on the roadside for an emergency scene. While traveling any roadway, when you see an emergency vehicle, slow down, move over, save lives. This does not just apply to the big red fire trucks. Ambulances, personal vehicles of first responders, police, tow trucks, construction workers, etc. are ALL at risk while working on the roadway. We are all on the side of the road to get a job done and to get it done safely.
Every first responder is a human being, whose goal is to make it home at the end of their shift. We all have children, spouses, parents, friends and family who not only want to see us come home, but come home SAFELY. There is a reason why we are out there, and we try to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Please, help prevent an accident like this from happening by being aware of your surroundings while driving, and drive appropriately given the conditions of the roadway. Our first responders depend on this.
Below is a picture of the engine that was hit on scene today. We cannot express enough how grateful we are that no first responder was injured during this incident. Trucks can be replaced, our people cannot.
We want to thank ALL first responders who were on scene today. Our members from Buffalo Fire Protection District, Mechanicsburg Fire & EMS, Dawson Fire Protection District, America Ambulance, LifeStar Ambulance Service Springfield, Illinois, Illinois State Police, Sangamon County Central Dispatch System / 9-1-1, and the tow truck companies that were present. Each and every one of you played a vital role today, and we are truly thankful all made it off the scene safely.
