💧 Keeping street runoff out of our waterways

Our Public Works Maintenance Technicians recently gave the divider wall along Q Street between 10th and 16th streets a much-needed cleaning. The wall separates the street from a surface drainage canal, and each year our crews clean the small openings in the wall that allow water to drain through. Keeping these openings clear helps water continue flowing through the wall and prevents water from pooling along the street.

This year, they cleaned more than just those openings. The crew cleared the entire wall of built-up moss, dirt, leaves, and other debris that can wash into the drainage canal when it rains.

Why does that matter? Streets collect all kinds of grime, including vehicle fluids and other pollutants. Cleaning up that material before it reaches the drainage system helps keep it out of our local waterways.

It's not always the most noticeable work our crews do, but it's an important part of keeping Springfield's stormwater system working and protecting our waterways.

Thinking about replacing some of your lawn? 🌱 Consider naturescaping!
It doesn’t have to happen all at once. This video shows one homeowner’s approach and what he likes about having a yard with more plants and less lawn.

Already naturescaping? Post pics of your plants! And if you’d like City recognition for your work, tell us about it at https://bit.ly/cleanwatergarden.
