🌧️Rain or shine☀️, our dedicated Public Works team is hard at work with branch pick-up! Remember, smaller branches can also be broken up and placed in yard waste bags or containers as part of our City’s bi-weekly yard waste pick-up.

The City of Springfield was honored to join the U.S. District Court-Central District of Illinois for a special Naturalization Ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. We were privileged to witness nearly 100 new citizens from several countries take their Oath of Allegiance. This ceremony marks the culmination of their journey to U.S. citizenship, and we wish them every success as they embark on this new chapter! ✨ Welcome to all our newest citizens! ✨

Part 3: Putting Civics into Action
🗣️ City Council vs. Committee of the Whole: What's the difference?
In Springfield, the City Council is responsible for passing laws, approving purchases, and making important decisions that affect the community. They meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month to conduct official business and vote on various matters.
On the other hand, the Committee of the Whole meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. This setting allows for more informal discussions and debates among council members about upcoming issues, providing a space for recommendations to be made before any formal voting takes place.
Join us tonight at 5:30 PM for the City Council meeting! Experience your local government in action, whether you attend in person or stream it online:

1908 Race Riot National Monument
In a landmark decision, President Joe Biden has designated the site of the 1908 Race Riot in Springfield as a national monument. This announcement coincides with the 116th anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded in Springfield, which were pivotal in shaping the civil rights movement and led to the founding of the NAACP.
The City of Springfield would like to thank the Biden Administration, the Department of the Interior, and our congressional leaders for their support in preserving this crucial chapter of our nation's history. The establishment of the 1908 Race Riot National Monument honors the resilience of those who were impacted by the violence and illustrates the necessity of confronting our past with honesty and integrity.
We also acknowledge the contributions of the countless individuals and organizations that have worked tirelessly over the past decade to achieve this designation. This includes the National Park Service, local partners, and the dedicated residents of Springfield. Together, we are committed to ensuring that these stories of courage and leadership remain a part of our collective history.
