Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault

Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault The Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault has a two-fold purpose: to alleviate the suffering of sexual assault victims and to prevent sexual violence.

Prairie Center values the unique identity of every person we serve. We welcome all genders, races, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientation or identity, ability, or religion.

We encourage everyone to take this time to reflect, learn and advocate for equality.

Black women have always been leaders in the movement to end sexual assault. Today, we honor the incredible legacies of Recy Taylor and Rosa Parks, two fearless women who stood up against injustice and inspired generations.

Recy Taylor was a survivor of sexual assault who refused to be silenced about her experience. After the local police department refused to press charges, Rosa Parks, who was a fierce advocate for survivors of sexual violence, helped Taylor by offering support and drawing attention to her fight. While her case eventually made it in front of a judge, it was dismissed due to no arrests being made and no evidence of the attack. Even after her attackers eventually admitted their involvement, Taylor was unable to get justice. Finally, in 2011, the Alabama Legislature issued Taylor a formal apology for the state's failure to hold her attackers accountable. Recy Taylor's fight for justice challenged a society that often silenced Black women. Her courage ignited the urgent need for change. We are grateful for Rosa Parks' example as we advocate for survivors in our community.
