Yesterday was a very busy canteen day. It started off with a building fire in the Reston area which our CERT partners handled with CAN400 and then a large extended operation gas leak in the Rt 50 & Stringfellow road area of Fairfax. While way out of our normal area, our crew of Mo and Sophie changed their personal schedules and managed to respond with CAN422A. Using up all our onboard supplies, our crew made an emergency supply run to a local 7/11 to restock Gatorade and water which is highly unusual. Eventually our CERT partners responded with CAN400 (after their fire event earlier) to relieve CAN422 crew. Eventually the situation was terminated around 1:00-1:30 am after about 7 hours.

We give a big shout out to our canteen crews and our CERT partners for all the hard work during an exceptionally busy evening.

All of our canteen units are funded 100% by donations and Bingo - if you wish to help support our operations, please consider making a donation at our GSVFD link below or stop by and play GSVFD Bingo on Sunday or Tuesdays!

We will never solicit by phone.

Look before you lock! We are headed into another stretch of hot and humid days. With that in mind, make it a habit to check your entire vehicle โ€” especially the back seat โ€” before locking the doors and walking away. Cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures in just 10 minutes on a hot day. A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's. When a child is left in a vehicle, the situation can quickly become dangerous. These tragedies can happen to anyone โ€“ but are always preventable.

Cause of backups linked to dump truck hitting overhead sign on I95 North south of Springfield.

The Virginia State Police is seeking the public's help with identifying the dump truck that struck an Interstate 95 overhead highway sign and then fled the scene. Anyone w/info about the truck is encouraged to call VSP at 804-750-8798 or by email at [email protected].

At 12:18 p.m. on July 11, 2024, the Virginia State Police was dispatched to a report of debris in the northbound lanes of I-95 near the 168 mile marker...just south of Route 289... in Fairfax County. The preliminary investigation revealed that a dump truck was traveling north on I-95 in the left lane with its dump bed fully raised and struck the overhead signage. The impact of the crash caused significant damage to the overhead signs and a large amount of debris to fall into the three right travel lanes. The investigation remains ongoing.

State police is working with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to have crews safely repair the overhead signage and its support structure.

Our canteen units are volunteer staffed and volunteer funded by community donations and bingo income. If you would like to help support our canteens, please consider donating (see link below) or coming out and playing GSVFD Bingo. We are also looking for members to join our team!

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans living in Galveston, Texas were told the Civil War had ended; the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln; and all African Americans were now free from the bo***ge of slavery. This date came to be known as Juneteenth. It is a time to reflect on history, celebrate freedom, and appreciate African American culture.

The US National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington forecasts a prolonged period of hot weather this week with temperatures in the 90s, with increasing humidity and high temperatures.

The combination of heat and humidity could result in heat indices above 100 degrees. Such extreme heat and humidity increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Stay safe during extreme heat by:
โœ… Staying hydrated
โœ… Limiting outdoor activities
โœ… Wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
โœ… Checking on elderly or vulnerable individuals
โœ… Never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles

During extremely hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged. When the body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, body temperature rises and you or someone you care about may experience a heat-related illness. Learn the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate actions to take.
