There is no way to ensure zero risk of COVID-19 when leaving home. Remember in general, the more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread.

Is your local hydrant playing hide and seek? Help us find them and clear the area (just like in winter, but you may need some hedge clippers) 🚒❤️👍 #SecondsCount #ClearTheHydrant

Usually, you think of keeping fire hydrants clear and accessible when it snows. These photos illustrate why you can’t take a summer break! Please help #FCFRD so that access to a fire hydrant in an emergency is possible year round. Thanks Debi for clearing around this hydrant in the Bailey’s Crossroads area!

Happy Birthday #FCFRD 🚒🚑🎂❤️😊

Today, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) celebrates its 71st birthday!

On July 1, 1949, the first 10 career firefighters were hired at an annual salary of $2,500.00. The first to be hired was Samuel Redmond who was issued badge #1 and assigned to Station 1 (McLean). Career firefighters were called “paid men” and served primarily as daytime apparatus drivers. The various chiefs of the volunteer departments would choose the personnel who would be hired by the County and ultimately work for their departments. This practice would continue for many years. As members of their respective volunteer departments these firefighters responded to “after hours” calls from their homes.

The department has grown exponentially since its inception. Today, FCFRD is a career and volunteer organization providing fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. There are approximately 1,400 career firefighters, 170 civilians, and 370 operational volunteers making the FCFRD the largest fire department in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the best in the nation. We continue the traditions of our past with a commitment to service excellence and a vision to protect the lives, property, and environment of our community.

Electrical Malfunction In Exhaust Fan Cause Of Springfield Townhouse Fire

On Thursday, May 28 at approximately 5:03 p.m., units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and the Fort Belvoir Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched for a reported townhouse fire in the 6800 block of Clowser Court in the Springfield area of Fairfax County.

Units arrived on the scene of a two-story, middle unit townhouse with smoke showing from the roof. Crews located a fire in the attic and quickly extinguished it. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

Five occupants were in the home at the time of the fire. One occupant smelled smoke and saw discoloring around a bathroom vent. The landlord was notified. Upon arrival, he attempted to extinguish the fire before calling 9-1-1. All occupants safely self-evacuated. Smoke alarms were present and sounded after the fire was discovered.

Fire Investigators determined that the fire was accidental in nature and started in a second-floor bathroom. The cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction with the bathroom exhaust fan.

Four occupants were displaced because of the fire. Red Cross assistance was offered and accepted. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $55,000.

Today Brigitte received VIP treatment from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. This morning Brigitte had an appointment at the Medstar Orthopaedic Institute, which was on the 5th floor. As we were checking in the electricity went out. After waiting for 15 minutes, Christopher and I made the decision to carry Brigitte down the stairs in her wheelchair. As we were deciding on what would be the safest way to take her down the stairs, a fireman asked if he could be of any help, Of course, we were very grateful for his help. Two firefighters carried her down as the fireman in charge guided them down and kept the stairwell clear. I just wanted to thank Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and express my sincere gratitude for their help in safely taking Brigitte down the stairs. ❤️👩‍🚒
