Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site Admission is free. Items related to The Prairie Troubadour's life and poetry are for sale in the souvenir room. Open year round Tuesday thru Saturday 10-4.

The birthplace and long-time home of poet Nicholas Vachel Lindsay who became famous in the early part of the 20th Century for his unique style of poetry and artwork (most famously "General William Booth Enters Into Heaven" and "The Congo"). Visitors to the home see displays of Lindsay family heirlooms, Vachel's artwork and learn about the poet, his family and his times. The home also has ties to A

braham Lincoln who visited the home on many occassions when his brother-in-law owned the home. The home is an Illinois state historic site and is located at 603 S. 5th Street in Springfield, Illinois. There is no admission fee but donations are accepted.

The 1908 Race Riot was a pivotal moment in Springfield's history and it set Vachel Lindsay down a path he never really strayed too far away from after those tragic events.
Local playwright Tim Crawford brings the story of those tragic days in August, 1908 to the stage in this dramatic telling of one family's experience during the riots.

Springfield historian Randy Miller shared this earlier on his page and I wanted to share. It's the Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Roxy Theater (the Majestic in Vachel's day) & the YWCA along 5th. Further south, the white house on the left, middle of the frame, is the Lindsay home!
