Today, we honor and remember all those who lost their lives as a result of the September 11th attacks, including the many first responders who rushed into danger immediately and in the days, weeks, and months that followed. This weekend, let’s reflect and consider how we can serve our community in their honor. #NeverForget

This week, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrates its 31st anniversary. Since its passing, the law has aimed to protect the fundamental rights and prevent the discrimination of persons with disabilities. And it has. For over three decades, the ADA has helped to uplift an estimated 61 million Americans living with a disability.

The ADA prohibits discrimination against people living with disabilities and affirms their fundamental rights, such as the right to equal opportunity and equitable participation in American society. We often overlook many of the contributions of the ADA such as ramps, closed captioning, and workplace accommodations.

We also take this time to recognize the steps that still need to be taken to create a more equitable society for people of all abilities. The ADA empowers disabled people to achieve social, educational, and academic growth, yet ableism, discrimination, and exclusion continue to pervade the lives of many.

MVLE, Inc. is honored to recognize the 31st anniversary of the ADA, and we hope to use this as a reminder of the progress that has been made and continues to be made. There is still much work to be done to ensure full rights and participation, but we hope to take this moment to celebrate the milestone legislation. We celebrate also, the richness of talent, knowledge and expertise that people with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities when inclusion is embedded in not only law but the way we live each day.

Our colleague Laura Olan from Single Stop shares what work means to her: "I work as a Facilitated Enroller for the aged, blind and disabled population at Single Stop. My role includes screening, educating and providing direct health insurance assistance for various Medicaid programs. Having access to an Enroller that can walk you through the Medicaid application and submission process is a vital service for my clients.

I love the work I do! Connecting consumers to healthcare benefits, answering their post-enrollment questions related to how to use their insurance or coverage, or providing advocacy and self-guidance is rewarding and exciting. Even more so now, during these challenging times!"

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month and the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we also hope to use this time to recognize the various inequities that continue to pervade the lives of many. At MVLE, our goal is to address them head-on by providing workforce development with disabilities, hoping to create a fairer society for all using the power of work.
