Phone scams targeting older adults are a growing form of elder abuse—and they can happen in an instant.

Scammers often use fear, urgency, or false promises to trick people into sharing personal information or sending money. These calls can sound convincing, especially when they target trust and emotions.

The best defense is awareness: never share sensitive information over the phone, verify unexpected calls independently, and encourage open conversations about scams with family and friends.

By staying informed and looking out for one another, we can help protect older adults from fraud and exploitation.

Standing up to elder abuse starts with awareness—and action.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including neglect, emotional harm, physical harm, and financial exploitation. Too often, it goes unseen or unspoken, but silence allows it to continue.

We all have a role to play: listen, check in, speak up when something doesn’t seem right, and support systems that protect older adults.

Respect, dignity, and safety should never depend on age.

Let’s stand together to stop elder abuse in all its forms.

If fear of falling is keeping you from enjoying everyday activities, A Matter of Balance can help. This supportive 8-week program is designed to help older adults improve balance, increase strength, and feel more confident staying active and independent.
