Craig and Becca Moots recognize the important role caring and conscientious nurses play in healthcare. The retired Taylorville couple established the Moots Family Fund through the Community Foundation as a way to support future nurses and also contribute to other causes.

“I like to think that donating has a ripple effect,” Craig said about the Fund. “If this helps a nursing student get a degree in nursing, and they go on to help other people, that’s the kind of thing we are interested in.”

Craig spent his career as a soybean geneticist for a seed company while Becca worked as an elementary school teacher and director of the gifted program in Taylorville’s school district.

The Fund is a family effort with their son and daughter who also contribute and help choose which organizations to support. Their son and his wife work in healthcare and live in Bloomington. Their daughter is a dietitian, her husband is a counselor, and they live in the Northwest Chicago suburbs with their three children.

The Foundation makes the process easy for the family. “The Community Foundation handles the paperwork and contacts the organizations you are interested in supporting,” Craig said. “That’s one of the things we liked rather than trying to chase down phone numbers or addresses and contact people ourselves. They make it a really easy way to contribute money to causes we are interested in.”

The Fund has supported several things related to healthcare, but family members have also chosen crisis organizations for women and children, a home being built in Taylorville to serve families who have lost a child, foster care support, and others.

“Part of it has been healthcare, but it has also varied, and that’s what is fun,” Craig said. “When we run across something that looks like a good organization doing the type of work we are interested in – the Foundation makes it easy to contribute.”

Becca appreciates how this is a family effort. “It is a good feeling every year when we decide which places we would like our money to go to,” Becca said. “It’s exciting for us. We do ours together, Craig and I, but then we contact our kids to do the same. We leave it up to them about what they want to choose. It makes us feel good we are able to offer this kind of help.”

When an event occurred that provided extra cash flow, it didn’t take long for Bruce and Barbara Thompson to agree on an idea to direct the money, and the Community Foundation was happy to assist.

“You throw an idea out one time at breakfast, and by lunch it’s a plan,” Bruce said. “Our focus is a donor-advised fund called the 1800 Shamrock Fund which we plan to benefit St. Patrick School.”

Giving back to the community is something the couple prioritizes. Bruce is a retired CPA who has also spent the past 10 years serving on the Community Foundation board of directors. Barb is a retired teacher with Springfield Public Schools District 186 who serves on the board at St. Patrick Catholic School.

The school dates back to 1910 and serves students of all backgrounds in small classes from preschool to grade five. Last year, when the school experienced an unexpected teacher vacancy in first grade, Barb agreed to come out of retirement and finish out the year. The day-to-day engagement with both students and fellow teachers is where she saw the school’s many opportunities firsthand, including a library improvement project the principal had envisioned.

“Our thought process was to try to use the Fund to support evidence-based projects and help with additional training for teachers for skills they could use in the classroom to help their students be more successful,” Bruce said. “Sometimes you need a little bit of money to get a matching grant from someone else who has a great idea.”

Before creating the Fund, Bruce and Barb talked it over with their two adult daughters, both of whom now live in the Pacific Northwest. Their youngest, Beverly, lives in Vancouver, Washington, while Beth, their oldest, lives in Portland, Oregon, with her family, which includes their first grandchild Juniper.

“Both daughters were very supportive of the idea,” Barb said. “They are also each very giving with the money they have. It’s just part of what we do. They were not surprised we wanted to help improve educational opportunities for others.”

For those considering a donor-advised fund, the couple has this advice. “Every little bit helps move an agenda forward, whatever it is that you care about,” Bruce said. “We just wanted something in place that could help St. Pat’s.”

10/11/2023

The McGraw kids – Mike and his sisters Jenna and Christa – learned the value of hard work from their parents, Rick and Donna McGraw, who opened their first McDonald’s restaurant in Litchfield in 1979, later expanding into other communities including Springfield, Williamsville and Lincoln.

Mike grew up working in the restaurant business, and through the years, he saw firsthand his parents’ commitment to giving back to the community – another McGraw family core value. When the time came to establish a comprehensive approach to philanthropy, the Community Foundation proved invaluable.
“Giving back is just something we’ve always done,” Mike said. “It’s nice to have the Foundation to guide you.”

The Foundation team helped Mike and his sisters set up the donor-advised McGraw Family Fund in 2022. Their father had passed away in 2018, and the McDonald’s Springfield stores were sold in 2022. Mike still operates a McDonald’s in Litchfield and Williamsville. His older sister is in the hotel business and his younger sister owns the Nancy’s Pizza restaurants in Litchfield and Springfield.
Bringing the charitable efforts of the three siblings together and organized into one fund was a primary goal. Mike had heard about the Foundation from a friend who encouraged him to meet with President & CEO John Stremsterfer.

“The Community Foundation staff was outstanding to work with,” Mike said. “They did a great job of explaining what they do and the impact they have in the community. The staff knows what the community needs are, how much we have to give and where to best direct those funds to be of the most help. They are always welcoming, friendly and very helpful.”

The McGraw Family Fund focuses on children and youth in the Greater Springfield area including Lincoln, Litchfield and Williamsville. Organizations close to Mike’s heart include Ronald McDonald House and the Carol Jo Vecchie Women & Children’s Center. He and his wife Juliana direct grants to their church, Springfield First, and also to St. Francis in Litchfield.

Mike hopes to set a positive example for their three young sons, much like his parents did for him. He also hopes to encourage people to recognize the positive impact they can have through charitable giving.

“If you are someone who wants to give, regardless of how much you have or have available, once you get it started and invested – it starts to build and grow,” Mike said. “Our Fund is an example of that. It’s something we got started, and here before too long, we’ll add to it with our plan to sustain it over time.”

10/04/2023

For 40 plus years – police beat to managing editor to publisher and countless committees, work groups and community boards along the way – Patrick Coburn loved Springfield, and his commitment to the community did not end when he died in May of 2022.

“When Pat committed to an institution or a place – it was really special to him and he saw it through,” said Maggie Cope, Patrick’s younger sister who lives in Hoopeston, Illinois. “He definitely was committed to Springfield.”

The former publisher of The State Journal-Register (SJ-R) left a $1.7 million unrestricted bequest to the Community Foundation which will be aptly named the Patrick F. Coburn Fund.

“Pat’s generous gift to the Foundation came completely unrestricted and is our largest unrestricted gift to date,” said Foundation President and CEO John Stremsterfer. “Unrestricted funds address the evolving needs of the community as they change over time. Our staff and board of directors will be very intentional in determining how best to honor Pat’s legacy in using these funds.”

After starting as a police reporter for the Illinois State Register, Pat became managing editor when the Register merged with the Illinois State Journal in 1974 to become the Springfield State Journal-Register. In 1997, he became publisher of the SJ-R and was given the James C. Craven Freedom of the Press Award by the Illinois Press Association in the fall of 2006.

“Pat was an Illinois native, and he loved the SJ-R, and he loved Springfield,” said Rich Saal, former photography editor for the newspaper. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that he left a gift to the Community Foundation. He supported the arts, culture, Friend-in-Deed, and many other charities. He supported and enjoyed everything that Springfield had to offer. One of his biggest contributions was to contribute to a vibrant daily newspaper.”

Former Governor Jim Edgar served with Pat on the board during the pivotal start-up period for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The two were each celebrated alumni of Eastern Illinois University (EIU). Patrick was inducted into the EIU Journalism Department Alumnus Hall of Fame in 2003 and was awarded an honorary doctorate of public service in 2006.

“We didn’t let people forget we both went to EIU,” the Governor said of their board service together. “Pat was very committed to the ALPLM, and he was involved in a lot of things in Springfield. He served an important function in helping Springfield move forward. It takes people outside of government to make a community work, and he was definitely a major factor.”

Having worked with Patrick for 20+ years, Rich Saal believes he built his legacy each and every day.

“Pat’s legacy was certainly in the quality of community journalism that we had,” Rich said. “Not only did he operate an outstanding newspaper – his legacy was his love of Springfield and the support he gave it. He was making gifts to all kinds of organizations and causes throughout his life.”

Maggie recalls that Pat appreciated how the Community Foundation did a lot of good for Springfield and the area. His family was not surprised he left a generous gift to the city he adopted as his own through the Foundation.

“A tribute isn’t anything Pat would want,” she said. “He didn’t do this for attention or accolades. He was humble. What he would want – if anything – would be if people would look at him as an example. That those who have plenty might think about doing something similar to give back.”
