✅Washington County Sheriff Jerry Pinkston Receives Donation from local family of Body Armor for K-9 Viper!

Washington County Sheriff Jerry Pinkston --- K9 Viper received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization “Vested Interest in K9s.”

Viper’s vest was sponsored by DC and Pamela Royalty of Cunningham, Tennessee and is embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of John "J.C." and Emily C. Royalty” of Springfield, Kentucky. A huge heartfelt thank you to DC Royalty who went above and beyond for our team! It was the Royalty’s wishes to leave a donation specifically to Washington County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Viper. It is creative, thoughtful gestures like this that remind us how lucky we are to serve such an incredible, supportive community. Please join us in thanking this fantastic family!

This program, “Vested Interest in K9s” is open to United States dogs, who are at least twenty months old, and are ACTIVELY EMPLOYED and CERTIFIED with a law enforcement agency. “Vested Interest in K9s” is a 501(c)(3) Charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This vest was custom made for our favorite four-legged deputy, Viper! It is NIJ certified and is lifesaving body armor for Viper. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s has provided over 6,603 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s all over the United States. While a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest, each vest has a value of $1,800 and weighs an average of 4-5 pounds and comes with a five-year warranty.

We truly are overwhelmed with gratitude. We are glad people of Washington County and their families recognize the value of our K-9 Unit. To D.C. and Pamela, your kindness directly supports the positive changes we are implementing throughout our community. We are so lucky to have people like the you backing us and taking care of K-9 Viper!

✅ OCTOBER 18, 2026: UPDATE from the Washington County Sheriff Jerry Pinkston: Vehicle found in Mercer County, Kentucky, Suspect Identified, Charges Pending —

Through investigation, Sheriff Pinkston had three suspected Mercer County locations of where the Acura may be parked.

Sheriff Pinkston called Mercer County Chief Deputy to assist with locating the suspected vehicle. Chief Deputy Sean Brown found the vehicle at one of these locations in Mercer County, hidden, behind a residence. On October 9, 2026, Chief Deputy Brown spoke with the suspect who admitted to driving the vehicle into the Washington County Farmer’s fence twice, causing damage and leaving the scene without informing the farmer, without informing the property owner, and without informing law enforcement.

Sheriff Pinkston has issued a Criminal Complaint Summons for Anthony Dean Cook of Perryville, age 24, for:

1. Leaving the Scene of an Accident
2. Criminal Mischief - 1st Degree

I wanted to take a moment to focus on our K-9 Narcotics and Tracking Team. I established this program in 2024 to strengthen public safety across the whole county. We really lucked out in acquiring K-9 Viper in April of 2025. Viper is a highly trained canine who is put in high-risk situations to track missing people and assist in narcotics detections. Counties like ours need a K-9 unit to deter drugs and cover wide areas. The only way to have a successful K-9 Unit is to have an eager, persistent, and determined Deputy to be a K-9 handler. We assigned Viper to Deputy Noah Settles and this match has exceeded my expectations. Since he started at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Viper has logged over 430 hours of training. He is trained on detecting Co***ne, Methamphetamine, He**in, Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Spice, Ma*****na and more. Deputy Settles and Viper are always on call and log hours together every week. Viper, like all of our deputies, has to re-certify every year. He does this with his handler through DrugBeat Professional K-9 Certifications Program. This takes a lot of time, dedication and focus from our deputies. We have two deputies that have successfully been through this K-9 program.

We also wanted to take a moment and say thank you to Judge Spalding and our Commonwealth Attorney, Shelly Miller for continuing to provide Court Orders involving drug evidence that help with our K-9 training. The legalities of these destruction orders are complicated and we lean on our Judges and attorneys. We want to thank the Washington County magistrates who voted to help us get Viper. We’ve been able to pay for Viper’s purchase, food, and veterinarian needs through the Heartland Trail, Harm Reduction Grant Program. We could not do it without everyone’s contribution! We are proud of our Washington County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team.
