Today we partnered with The Outlet for their annual "Bridging the Gap" event which welcomed hundreds of community members at Jaycees Park!

This event aimed to cultivate a more familiar and trusting relationship between the community and local police in a fun and relaxed setting. To build a safer community, it's essential to establish trust and familiarity with those responsible for our protection. Today brought us one step closer to a community where everyone feels supported, safe, and protected.

During the event, our Health Initiatives Department offered free health screenings, which included blood pressure checks, glucose screenings, and other vital health assessments to all attendees. The park also featured free food, drinks, community games, activities, horseback riding, and so much more!

Jade Kittrell continues to build upon her journey at the Springfield Urban League! Jade joined us in the summer of 2023 as a Community Health Worker Intern. In this role, she served as a vital connection to the community through outreach, organizing wellness events, and providing essential knowledge on HIV awareness and prevention.

In August of 2023, Jade advanced to her current role as our Public Health Program Assistant. "Taking this job at SUL was important for me because it allowed me to blend my love of public health with my dedication to serving underserved populations," Kittrell shared.

At the Springfield Urban League, we value making an impact on the community and serving others. Jade added, "The most fulfilling aspect of my job is knowing that I am part of a larger movement towards health equity and social justice."

Today, the Springfield Urban League proudly participated in the Juneteenth celebration with the community at Comer Cox Park!

Juneteenth holds immense importance as it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day stands as a powerful reminder of our ongoing journey toward equality and justice.
While we strive for a brighter future, we take pride in honoring and respecting all those who have contributed to our progress.

Project Ready Success Story: Rayshon Perkins Journey with the Springfield Urban League

Overcoming Barriers to Secure the Diploma🎓:

Life is often full of unexpected twists and turns, and for Rayshon, these challenges came early and hard. His journey, marked by resilience and determination, is a testament to the power of community support and personal perseverance.

Rayshon's academic journey took a sharp turn when he was forced to leave Springfield High School midway through the year. "I had no other options that I knew of besides to enroll in the NAACP Back to School-Stay in School program supported by the Springfield Urban League," Rayshon stated.

Stepping into the NAACP program, Rayshon felt the weight of new expectations. "When I first started at NAACP, I felt like I had to go a little above and beyond with my new school because I thought everybody had expectations of me," he says. The combination of being behind on his credits and the departure from SHS felt like a significant setback. Determined to prove himself, he worked diligently to stay on track.

Shortly after enrolling in the program, Rayshon moved out of his mother's house. The move, combined with a series of unfortunate decisions, led him to take a few months off from school. "I can't explain why, but I just got caught up in a lot of bad stuff," Rayshon admitted. For two and a half months, he distanced himself from his education, putting his future in jeopardy.

The turning point in his life came through the persistent outreach and love of his teachers, relatives, and staff from the Springfield Urban League. Together, we reminded him of the importance of education and his goal of graduating. These messages reignited his desire to complete his education.

Through Rayshon's resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering support of his community he received his High School diploma and graduated on-time this year. It really does take a village to support our youth. Rayshon’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks DO NOT define us; our response to them does.

With determination and the right support, Rayshon turned his step-backs into a stepping stone towards a brighter future.

We took a HUGE step towards bridging the digital divide in our community by distributing over 100 free computers to Springfield residents for "Illinois Connectivity Day" thanks to the help of our partners AT&T and Compudopt! 💻

Today's distribution is a component of AT&T's Connected Learning® campaign, aimed at equipping community members with the necessary technology for education, work, and personal development. Additionally, it is part of the statewide 521-on-5/21 initiative, through which AT&T is providing 521 refurbished laptops across Illinois. Recipients also received free digital literacy training to help them effectively use their new devices.

To end what has been an AMAZING week for our Redeploy youth program participants, our Workforce and Economic Empowerment Department scheduled a special trip to Riverside Stables. This field trip introduced the youth to alternative coping mechanisms and the therapeutic advantages of animal stress relief therapy.

Our Redeploy program focuses on guiding youth toward positive life choices, personal growth, and emotional balance and stability.

Animal stress relief therapy, also known as equine therapy, has been shown to positively impact individuals dealing with emotional challenges. Engaging with animals, particularly horses, can encourage feelings of tranquility and relaxation while aiding in the development of valuable coping skills.

We value every individual that walks through the doors of the Springfield Urban League.

Our 2024 HBCU Tour left lifelong memories and created an opportunity for scholars to get in-depth exposure of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Our Project Ready and 21st Century Program encourages all of our program participants to consider higher education as they quickly approach the end of their high school experience. Today we reflect on the success and impact of the HBCU tour in honor of National Decision Day!

Today our scholars from the Feitshans Elementary School 21st Century Program volunteered at the NAACP. They performed two inspirational dances and gave back to the community by serving lunch to local senior citizens!

The Springfield Urban League, in partnership with the SIUE School of Medicine's "Minds in Motion Program", collaborated on this initiative in efforts to enhance and maintain the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of elders with Alzheimer's. African Americans have a higher likelihood of developing Alzheimer's, we recognize how crucial it is to engage in activities that stimulate cognitive function.

In addition to encouraging academic excellence in the classroom, our Project Ready and 21st Century Program also instills the values of good citizenship and community engagement.
