The City of Springfield is committed to making our downtown streets safer, smoother, and more accessible for everyone. As part of this effort, we are moving forward with a Bituminous Overlay project that includes significant ADA upgrades to improve accessibility for all pedestrians. The contract for this work is currently open for bidding, with the bid opening scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2025.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
The following downtown streets are anticipated for construction work between June 16 and September 5, 2025:

▪️6th St – Cook to Madison
▪️7th St – Cook to Madison
▪️Monroe St – 5th to 9th
▪️Washington St – 6th to 9th

Additionally, work is planned for 11th St (Cook to Madison) between June 2 and August 15, 2025.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭
The project will include:
▪️ADA ramp upgrades at intersections to improve
accessibility
▪️ Sidewalk and curb repairs to create safer
pedestrian pathways
▪️Traffic-calming “bump-outs” to enhance safety at
select intersections
▪️Milling and resurfacing of street pavements for a
smoother driving experience

The school buzzed with excitement as local community members shared powerful stories that showcase African American culture and history. Our Feitshans Fireflies were captivated by special guest readers, who brought these vibrant tales to life—sparking curiosity and building cultural understanding within our community.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event possible! Your dedication to fostering a love of learning and celebrating cultural heritage is truly inspiring.

For two years, I have worked tirelessly alongside Martin and Laurie Haxel to breathe new life into 322 E. Adams St., a key piece of our efforts to revitalize downtown Springfield. I fully support this investment in our city’s future.

However, due to a new legal interpretation of the state’s TIF law, I was advised to abstain from voting on this project—despite having participated in similar votes for years, just as past and present council members have done. This unexpected ruling raises important questions about how we, as elected officials, can effectively advocate for our communities.

While I respect our legal counsel’s perspective, I remain committed to fighting for 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 that enhance our downtown, create 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, and make Springfield a place we’re all proud to call home. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure clarity and fairness in how these decisions are made.
