IL NOW is a collective of chapters from all over the state with the common goal of taking action to We are the grassroots arm of the women’s movement.
(13)
NOW is dedicated to making legal, political, social, and economic change in our society in order to achieve our goal, which is to eliminate sexism and end all oppression. The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing members and more than 500 local and campus affiliates in all 50 states and
the District of Columbia. Since our founding in 1966, NOW’s goal has been “to take action” to bring about equality for all women. Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are principled, uncompromisingf, and often ahead of their time. NOW is a leader, not a follower, of public opinion. NOW's 6 core issues:
- Reproductive Rights & Justice
- Ending Violence Against Women
- Economic Justice
- LGBT Rights
- Racial Justice
- Constitutional Equality Amendment
******************************************
NOW activists use both traditional and non-traditional means to push for social change. NOW activists do extensive electoral and lobbying work and bring lawsuits. We also organize mass marches, rallies, pickets, non-violent civil disobedience and immediate, responsive “zap” actions. In 2004, the March for Women’s Lives became the largest mass action of any kind in U.S. history, bringing a record 1.15 million people to Washington, DC to advocate for women’s reproductive health options. NOW’s actions have established the organization as a major force in the sweeping changes that put more women in political posts; increased educational, employment and business opportunities for women; and enacted tougher laws against violence, harassment and discrimination. NOW is a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women’s rights.

Last year, a family of four with a household income of $111K was eligible for a voucher. While two-thirds of students in the program, ~6,000, were low-income ( = qualify for free or reduced price lunch), only $20M of the $76M in vouchers (28%) went to low-income students.
Meanwhile, there are more than 900,000 students in Illinois public schools from economically-disadvantaged households. 80% of public schools are still not adequately funded.
We’re destined to fight for reproductive freedom together—when we’re united, we’re unstoppable! 🔮🫶

FACT: Schools can still provide scholarships and donors can still receive a federal tax credit. The difference in Invest in Schools, however, is much more important to those students in PUBLIC schools.
Almost 2 million children attend Illinois public schools, yet, only 9,500 others get these scholarships to attend private and mostly religious-based schools. Invest in Schools reduces the amount of your tax dollars going to public schools by MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. That means millions to religious schools who can discriminate against LGBTQ kids, children of color, those with disabilities and those needing special assistance-AND THEY DO DISCRIMINATE!
Additionally, less that half of those receiving these scholarships are children of color and the majority were already attending those schools.
Why would you want your tax money going to a religious school that will freely and legally discriminate against our children??
Call your legislators and tell them to stop diverting YOUR hard earned money away from the majority of our public school students!

Guns and domestic violence are intrinsically linked. As shares:
✔️ There are intricate links between mass violence and family violence. Men using fi****ms to inflict public terror also often share histories of violence against women.
✔️ In more than half of the mass shootings in this country over the past decade, the perpetrator shot a current or former intimate partner or other family member as part of the rampage.
✔️ Nearly two-thirds of all domestic violence related mass shootings also ended with the shooter killing themselves.
✔️ Approximately 80% of child victims of mass shootings died in incidents connected to family violence.
Leaving a violent relationship can be deadly – especially when a survivor files an order of protection with the courts. Join us in demanding lawmakers in Springfield pass Karina’s bill to protect survivors of domestic violence by contacting your lawmakers right now: https://p2a.co/DvLRKX1

Repost from @feminist • LGBTQ+ people belong. stop banning our stories! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ by @jazzjennings_ & @sander_jennings “Today, despite living my life as a proud trans woman, my children’s book “I Am Jazz” is one of the most banned and challenged books of the decade. Legislators ban it because they believe it’s an attempt to "recruit" young children into identifying as LGBTQ. It is not. The book is about identity, giving people the freedom to express who they feel they are and how to be a good friend to someone who's different. LGBTQ+ people belong. Allowing us to share our stories creates a more inclusive community for all. 💞🏳️🌈” 💭 @jazzjennings_ 🎥: Thank you to my brother @Sander_jennings for helping me film and edit this

Repost from @julianaforlg • When @JBPritzker and I began this journey in 2018, I felt the magnitude of what it meant to come into this role. To be a voice for those who have long been unseen and unheard, and to be the first Black woman elected to this office -- but not the last.
Repost from @vp • Right now, we’re in the fight to protect reproductive rights. Here’s what you need to know.
Repost from @ckyourprivilege • Hi 👋🏾 friends, @myishathill here with a rendition of #iwastodayyearsold 👩🏽🏫 Eliza “Lyda” Burton Conley, who lived from 1869-1946, was a member of the Wyandotte Nation who became a lawyer to help protect tribal land in Kansas City, specifically, the Huron Indian Cemetery, a burial ground of the Wyandotte peoples--where her own mother and ancestors were buried. When the U.S. government decided to sell the land and relocate the graves, Lyda filed an injunction and fought it all the way to the Supreme Court. Together with her sisters, they erected a small dwelling at the entrance of the cemetery, which they called Fort Conley--where they lived, keeping armed guard, to protect the sacred land of their peoples. Lyda went on to argue her case in front of the Supreme Court, citing a 1855 treaty the government was violating with the sale of the land. She lost in the Supreme Court, but seeing her efforts, a Kansas state senator (a member of the Kaw Nation) worked to pass a law to protect the burial site in 1913. Conley and her sisters continued to physically protect the land, though, as the city continued to make attempts to get permission to develop it. Ultimately, she won but it was a lifelong battle—and beyond. Lyda was buried at that sacred site in 1946. In 1971, the cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It became a National Historic Landmark in 2017. In her own words, from a 1909 interview, when she was asked if she was afraid to spend so much time in a cemetery: "Afraid of what? Afraid of my mother - or of my grandmother - that their spirits would harm me, when I was enduring those hardships for the security of their last resting place? Why should I be afraid - of the dead? I builded the hut close to the grave of my mother and I felt secure every moment of my stay in the grounds that may appear to you, gloomy, but sacred to me for their memories."
