Illinois National Organization for Women

Illinois National Organization for Women We are the grassroots arm of the women’s movement. The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States.

Illinois NOW is a collective of chapters from all over the state taking action on six core issues: Constitutional Equality, Reproductive Rights & Justice, Racial Justice, LGBTQIA+ Rights, Economic Justice, and Ending Violence Against Women. NOW is dedicated to making legal, political, social, and economic change in our society in order to achieve our goal, which is to eliminate sexism and end all

oppression. NOW has hundreds of thousands of contributing members and more than 500 local and campus affiliates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since our founding in 1966, NOW’s goal has been “to take action” to bring about equality for all women. Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are principled, uncompromisingf, and often ahead of their time. NOW is a leader, not a follower, of public opinion. NOW's 6 core issues:
- Reproductive Rights & Justice
- Ending Violence Against Women
- Economic Justice
- LGBT Rights
- Racial Justice
- Constitutional Equality Amendment

******************************************
NOW activists use both traditional and non-traditional means to push for social change. NOW activists do extensive electoral and lobbying work and bring lawsuits. We also organize mass marches, rallies, pickets, non-violent civil disobedience and immediate, responsive “zap” actions. In 2004, the March for Women’s Lives became the largest mass action of any kind in U.S. history, bringing a record 1.15 million people to Washington, DC to advocate for women’s reproductive health options. NOW’s actions have established the organization as a major force in the sweeping changes that put more women in political posts; increased educational, employment and business opportunities for women; and enacted tougher laws against violence, harassment and discrimination. NOW is a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women’s rights.

Using reversible contraception, such as birth control pills or IUDs, does not make it harder or impossible to get pregnant later.

But misinformation about contraception and infertility is widespread and being weaponized by conservative movements around the world.

In a new commentary, Population Council and Guttmacher experts break down the evidence showing that contraception does not impact people’s long-term fertility, and in fact, contraceptive use can protect people’s fertility.

By offering evidence-based counseling, providers can help patients safeguard their fertility, make informed family planning decisions and exercise their reproductive freedom.

Imagine working super hard on a huge project, but your boss takes all the credit and becomes famous around the world. That is exactly what happened to the woman in this photo.

Her name was Marion Mahony Griffin, and she is one of the most important people in history that you have probably never heard of.

Back in 1895, Marion became the very first employee hired by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

She was a brilliant trail-blazer who became one of the first licensed female architects in the entire world.

While Frank Lloyd Wright got all the praise for his famous buildings, Marion was the secret genius behind the scenes.

Marion was an incredible artist. She created beautiful watercolor drawings of buildings that combined architecture with nature.

Her unique drawing style actually defined the look of the famous Prairie School architecture movement.

When people today look at old drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright houses, they are usually looking at Marion's artwork. She was the one who made his ideas look beautiful on paper so clients would buy them.

Frank Lloyd Wright had a massive ego and rarely gave Marion the credit she deserved. After working with him, Marion and her husband Walter Griffin went on to design Canberra, which is the capital city of Australia.

She was a global superstar of design, but history slowly forgot about her contributions.Marion passed away in 1961 in Chicago.

She was broke, and she was buried in Graceland Cemetery inside an unmarked grave. For over thirty years, thousands of people walked right past her final resting place without knowing a genius was buried there.

Thankfully, a group of historians raised money to finally give her a beautiful memorial plaque.
Next time you look at beautiful, modern architecture, remember Marion Mahony Griffin, the woman who helped draw our world.

Gun violence is severe for women in Illinois. Even more alarming, 76% of female murder victims nationally are killed by someone they know. We have to do more to protect women and prevent gun violence before it happens.

Follow G-PAC and support the fight for a safer Illinois.
