Anti-OHV Details Lead to Seizure of Six Illegal Dirt Bikes, Motorcycles and Mopeds
Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday August 26th and Saturday August 29th, members of the Springfield Police Department working an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enforcement detail seized two dirt bikes, an electric dirt bike, a moped and two illegal motorcycles.
Springfield Police Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. These vehicles are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders. Some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.
On Wednesday, an unlicensed Tank motorcycle rider was involved in a two vehicle crash at Berkshire Avenue and Jasper Street. The 35-year-old male rider was unlicensed, and the motorcycle was uninsured and unregistered. The rider will receive a criminal complaint and the motorcycle was seized.
On the same date, officers conducted a traffic stop of a Tank motorcycle rider. The motorcycle was unregistered and the rider, a 18-year-old male, did not have a proper license to ride. He was issued a criminal complaint. The motorcycle was seized.
Also on the 26th, officers stopped a dirt bike rider at the intersection of State Street and Concord Street. The rider, a 35-year-old male, was issued a civil citation and the dirt bike was seized.
On Saturday August 29th, officers conducted a traffic stop of a electric dirt bike rider in a parking lot near the intersection of Armory Street and Carew Street. The 15-year-old male rider was issued a civil citation and the dirt bike was towed.
Later on Saturday, officers observed a rider on a moped. A traffic stop was made on the 0-100 block of Massachusetts Avenue. The 14-year-old male rider will receive a criminal complaint and the moped was towed.
Also on the 29th, officers stopped a dirt bike rider on East Columbus Avenue. The 16-year-old male rider was issued a civil citation and the dirt bike was seized.
The Springfield Police Department has now seized 119 illegal off-highway-vehicles and illegal motorcycles mainly due in part to these continued Anti-OHV details.
