As many of you may know, the Effingham Animal Shelter will begin renovations this week. It is our goal to continue services as efficiently as possible during the renovations. Please understand that while renovations are in progress over the next year, there will continue to be limited space. Calls for service involving animal cruelty cases, animal bites with human victims/quarantines, and truly aggressive animals will always take priority over reports of stray animals/pickup requests. We ask that the community keep in mind that if you locate a stray animal, it will most likely take longer for the space and/or resources to become available for us to assist you. Please consider this before picking up any animal that you locate.

We, along with the animal shelter staff, are always looking for volunteers to foster animals or volunteers to temporarily hold a located stray animal until a space at the shelter becomes available. If you have been considering it, this would be a perfect time to help! ๐Ÿ’œ

If you call to report a stray animal that you are wanting picked up, please be prepared for us to ask you if you are willing to foster temporarily or hold the animal until space is available. We understand that some will not be happy in having to wait, however, we will maintain a pickup/waitlist to ensure that everyone gets assistance as soon as we are able. While waiting for space, we will also ask for photos of the stray animal to attempt to identify the animalโ€™s owner beforehand via social media.

Keep in mind there are 4 microchip scanning stations in Effingham County if you need them. (See the next post for the locations)

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we anticipate this much needed upgrade for our county!

๐Ÿ“ฃ Groundbreaking Ceremony: Effingham County Animal Shelter Renovation

Effingham County will celebrate the official groundbreaking for the Animal Shelter renovation project on April 30 at 4 p.m. at 307 Ga. Hwy 119 South, Springfield.

This SPLOST-funded project represents a major investment in animal care, shelter operations, and community service. Planned upgrades include:

โ€ข Expanded kennel space โ€” increasing capacity from 54 to 84 kennels to safely and comfortably house more animals
โ€ข New grooming rooms โ€” improving hygiene and overall animal well-being
โ€ข Dedicated laboratory areas โ€” strengthening on-site veterinary diagnostics and medical care
โ€ข Enhanced visitor spaces โ€” creating a more welcoming and functional environment for adopters and community members

These improvements are designed to elevate the quality of care provided to animals, streamline daily operations, and improve the experience for residents engaging with the shelter.

We look forward to marking this important milestone as Effingham County continues working toward a safer, more efficient, and more compassionate facility for animals and the community that supports them.
