If walls could speak, this old tin roof building might narrate the story of how a small town evolved into a bustling community, replete with post offices, stores, and other amenities. It may also illuminate the shifting perceptions of community and its importance to individuals over time. Possibly, it could reminisce about its role in supplying the local residents and lament the loss of traditional country markets and stores, displaced by Amazon, UPS, and FedEx. The building would recount the histories of the men and women who operated the store throughout the years, each with their distinct tastes and merchandise. What once sat in the windows? What once hung from the chain in the ceiling? Whose hands once laid on the counter? So many stories within. It would likely also share tales of friendships and rivalries that blossomed within its walls, I would be captivated by the stories that these wooden walls and tongue-and-groove boards, which line the floor of this fading establishment in Maud, might share.

The MAUD name is elected in honor of Maud S., a renowned trotting horse celebrated in harness racing during the 1880s. Born in 1874 in Woodford County, Kentucky, Maud was a standardbred filly known for her stubbornness. Prior to being named, she was purchased by Civil War Captain George Stone, who had relocated to Cincinnati and was an avid horse racing enthusiast. Stone granted his trainer, W.W. Bair, the freedom to select any horse, and Bair chose an untrained, two-year-old, unbroken filly. Despite initial resistance to training, Maud demonstrated remarkable quickness and trotting ability, prompting Stone to name her after his eldest daughter, Maud Stone. The horse went on to establish an impressive seven world records for trotting between 1880 and 1885. In addition to inspiring the name of a small Kentucky town in Washington County, Maud S.'s image and name were utilized to advertise various commercial products, including nails, ci******es, medicine, and flour, during the 1890s and 1900s.

From atop Maud Hill, as summer's lingering days drag on, a transition to fall unfolds, marked by parched grounds and trees veiling a once-thriving town, now dwindling like the leaves falling from the hill's trees. Welcome to Maud! May its legacy endure for years to come.
