Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery Supporting Children and Strengthening Families

Providing 24/7 emergency childcare &
family support The Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery opened May 15, 1989.

It was Marinda "Mini" O'Beirne's love of children and her desire to combat child abuse that brought a crisis nursery to central Illinois. Mini was an administrative assistant to an Illinois State Representative when she heard of a crisis nursery in another city. She spent two years investigating, planning and encouraging others to join her crusade against child abuse. Amidst all of her planning, s

he died of cancer on April 29, 1988. A steering committee carried out Mini's dream and named the Nursery in her honor.

We couldn’t agree more! Kids need to have the time to be creative, using their minds productively. And we adults need to set positive examples by putting our phones down.

I took away my daughters’ iPads.

I took away all their electronics.

I’m so tired of them gravitating to their devices from the second they wake up until the second they fall asleep.

So, I took them away this weekend and told my two children to go play.

No phones. No iPads. No video games.

And guess what?

We lived to talk about it.

After the initial cries and whining and panic set in by my oldest, the two eventually found themselves at the table creating a Lego masterpiece. They wandered outside and came up with a trampoline routine, complete with handmade tickets to see their “show”. And we all picked up books, spending a lazy afternoon sprawled out on the couch.

Electronics have brought out the worst in my girls.

The meltdowns and the emotional outbursts when we say “time’s up” aren’t healthy. They’re becoming more and more to their devices, and I feel like electronics are slowly chipping away at their creativity.

I remember the days of playing outside with the neighborhood kids, the skits we would come up with, and lemonade stands we would hold at the corner.

We need to let our children be bored.

And here’s the thing—it starts with us.

I’m the first to admit that I need to put my own phone down and be present, to unplug from TikTok and the mindless scrolling.

As I put my own phone away, I watched my girls, their unique minds at work as they built Legos and crafts.

Friends, take it from me: let them be bored.

Chances are, their imagination will soar.

**a good reminder as we get ready for summer.

Wishing all the Mama's a very special Happy Mother's Day! 🥰 It's not always easy, maybe not the path you planned on being on, or the road has had a lot of roadblocks, but we see you and honor you. We're sharing this video and while Granny Bibbens talks about the mama's who have chosen their role, the message is meaningful to all. You always have a choice to step up. Your little and bigs love you for doing so. 🩷

We love this so much! The work we do literally couldn't happen without you! ❤️

So many blessings this week! We were able to snap a quick pic of this one. A retired volunteer stopped by for a visit and this little nugget insisted that she be held by him. Mind you, she's a go getter and doesn't typically stop for anyone to hold her unless she's under the weather. It's amazing how these children are drawn to our volunteers. ❤️
Now for our , finally on Wednesday 😂... We are in need of diapers (not size 2 please), Pull-Ups in all sizes, all types of formula, dishwasher rinse aid, and air freshening spray. We also have a special need of a new vacuum. The Shark Lift Away ones seem to work the best for our space and needs. 💙
We truly appreciate the support and donations. We have so many wonderful things going on and can't wait to share them with you. 🥰
