October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989. Since then, it has been a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and become a voice for its victims. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.

This is Chef Michael Airhart of Taste for The Homeless! He is an absolute powerhouse of good for the community and world at large! He was featured on the The Jennifer Hudson Show where he talks about his work serving the homeless community.

He will be in town serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to our home insecure community Tuesday - Friday. He really knows how to roll out the red carpet to those in need and we think that is incredibly special. We are thankful & lucky to be working with him all week long!

Do you enjoy playing with kids that you don’t have to take home with you? Rocking babies? Getting to know other adults who are also amazing?

We are always looking for volunteers, but we could especially use someone on Tuesdays from 1:45-5. This is the time of our parenting class and unfortunately we have some who cannot attend without childcare. By having another adult in the Nursery, we can take additional kids. It’s a win-win situation! Give us a call at 217-525-6800 ext 3 or check out our website at mocn.org.

If a reason is needed as to why MOCN could use a larger facility, consider the fact that as of 5pm today, 13 children had been turned away. 🥺

Welcome back ! While the kids and staff have been getting their grove on 💃🏼 🕺 , I’ve been working on updating our Amazon wishlist. 🧐 This link will take you directly to our list. https://a.co/d3UP4Vl

We get a lot of questions regarding what we need most at this time. In no particular order: diapers sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6; all sizes of pull-ups (any brand); baby wipes; gift cards for groceries and household items; bags of candy as we prepare for Halloween events and fresh fruit.

Larger size diapers are always at the top of the list. We could easily hand out $500 worth a week through the pantry, not to mention what we use in the Nursery. We do try to make them last but the need is high.

We hope you have been out enjoying the sunshine and cooler temps this week. ☀️

We try to shout out our appreciation to all of our supporters, but today is a little more personal. If you have called or come by the Nursery in the last few weeks you may have noticed the staff looking or sounding a little frazzled. Or you may have been turned away for care due to capacity. The staff and our volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide care for a larger family with urgent needs. Even when they were exhausted and just wanted to go home to their own beds, they couldn’t say no. On multiple occasions they bought dinner for each other as they worked side by side, rocking babies and comforting little ones or finding new activities to do with them. Laundry and dishes still needed done, donations sorted, diapers handed out, questions answered. While maybe a little worse for wear, they each did it with love and grace and I am beyond proud to be a part of the MOCN team with them. It’s safe to say we are all going to miss these kiddos and hope to see them again. We may be tired but this is why we do what we do. And major props to Mom for doing all she does; no matter how sweet they are, parenting is hard work. ❤️

If you were one of the families we’ve had to turn away, please accept our apologies and know it was never an easy decision. We will be back to “normal” in a day or two.

Besides reiterating what a wonderful team of staff and volunteers we have, it has been reinforced to me the great need Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery and Springfield has for a larger facility.

A week full of dressing up and giving back! It was so much fun to see the students not only embody each themed day to the fullest but embody the generosity Christ calls us to. We collected various resources that will go towards serving our community!

In John 13:15, Jesus reminds us to follow His example of humble service saying “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (NIV). Here at SCS, we teach our students the value of serving others, and we have fun doing it!
