Memorial Day Ceremony Update

Due to the forecast for inclement weather, tomorrow’s Springfield, New Jersey - Union County Memorial Day ceremony has been moved indoors to the Jonathan Dayton High School auditorium and will begin promptly at 10:00 AM.

Please note:
• The parade has been cancelled
• Refreshments have been cancelled

We invite all residents to join us as our community comes together to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation and our freedom.

See you there!

Here are a few quick updates Springfield, New Jersey - Union County residents have been asking about:

• The Township Committee approved an ad hoc committee to review applications for the previously approved retail cannabis location on Route 22 in the Center Island area.

• Wabeno will be included in upcoming paving projects, and New Jersey American Water will install piping to provide a permanent water source for the community gardens.

• There was also discussion regarding a possible dog park near the gardens at Wabeno. Personally, I do not believe the property is large enough to properly support a dog park, and I believe any future location would need adequate space for both small and large dogs.

• Twice weekly garbage pickup begins the week of Memorial Day and continues through the first week of September. If your pickup day falls on an observed holiday, such as Memorial Day or Labor Day, there will be no collection that day.

I hope everyone enjoys the Memorial Day weekend, and I look forward to seeing many of you at the Memorial Day Parade on Monday.

Our next Township Committee meeting will be Tuesday, May 26th at 7:00 PM at Town Hall. Residents are always welcome to attend, ask questions, and share feedback.

Stay Safe!

Many residents have asked what authority municipalities actually have when long term redevelopment or construction issues remain unresolved.

This week, the New Jersey Appellate Division issued an important published decision involving Springfield, New Jersey - Union County, and the Gomes redevelopment project that helps answer that question.

The court ruled that municipalities may continue issuing daily fines for ongoing ordinance violations when problems remain uncorrected after notice is given. In this case, the ruling involved construction-site safety and fencing requirements intended to protect the public.

The decision is significant because it reinforces that towns are not always limited to a one-time penalty when violations continue over long periods of time. The court recognized that municipalities need practical enforcement tools to encourage compliance and protect residents.

At the same time, this ruling does not allow towns to bypass due process or take over private projects. Municipal government still operates within the limits of state law.

I understand why many residents remain frustrated with the appearance and pace of the downtown project. Residents deserve transparency, factual information, and consistent communication, and I will continue providing updates as developments occur.

With just three weeks until the June 2nd primary, Vote by Mail ballots have arrived in Springfield for voters who automatically receive them.

Because of the large volume of mail involved, ballots are being mailed out in batches over several days, so some residents may have received theirs earlier than others.

Keep an eye out for the bright yellow envelope marked “OFFICIAL MAIL-IN BALLOT.”

For Democrats, this year’s ballot is fairly straightforward. The Sheriff, County Commissioner, and U.S. Senate races are all running uncontested primaries.

The main contested Democratic race on the ballot is the Congressional race. I’ve included a sample section of the ballot below for reference.

Each Vote-by-Mail ballot includes prepaid return postage and instructions. If your ballot hasn’t arrived yet, you can check your mailing status at unioncountyvotes.com or contact the Union County Clerk’s Office at (908) 527-4996.

If you have a Vote-By-Mail ballot, it must be sent in by Election Day. One of the easiest ways to return it is to use the Drop Box behind Chisholm, near the ramp, right by the playground near the Margaret Bandrowski room.

I appreciate everyone who continues to follow along and stay engaged with these community updates.

Mother’s Day is a reminder to slow down and appreciate the people who give so much of themselves to their families every single day.

In Springfield, we are fortunate to have so many strong and caring mothers, grandmothers, and role models who help shape the character of our community in ways both big and small. From raising families and supporting local schools to volunteering, mentoring, and simply always being there when needed, their impact is felt throughout our town every day.

I know personally how important that influence can be. My mother taught me the values of kindness, respect, resilience, and mindfulness. Those lessons stayed with me growing up and continue to guide me in my life and in how I approach serving our community today.

So many of the things that make Springfield special begin with the care, patience, and dedication that starts at home.

To all the mothers and mother figures in Springfield, New Jersey - Union County, thank you for all that you do for your families and for our community.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Mother’s Day.

Quick reminder for anyone thinking about getting involved locally this weekend.

The Rebecca Bennett canvass launch is tomorrow in Springfield, New Jersey - Union County. CD7 is expected to be one of the most competitive congressional races in the country, so there’s definitely a lot of local energy around this one already.

If you’ve never done something like this before, don’t overthink it. It’s really just a chance to meet people, be part of the conversation, and get out in the community for a few hours.

I’ll be there as well.

No pressure. Just sharing because people often ask how to get involved beyond Election Day.
