Looking for a field trip destination that combines hands-on fun with real-world learning?

At Emerald Village in Little Switzerland, NC, earth science and local history come to life! Students don't just read about rocks and minerals—they get to explore 1 of the 12 mines on the property, as you explore the old mine you will learn about what the miners was mining for and how they would mine for the materials. everyone can also gets to sift through their own buckets at the Gemstone Mine, and take home all the gems you find in the bucket. While you are at Emerald Village we have plenty of picnic tables where everyone can eat lunch and enjoy how beautiful Emerald Village is!

If you're looking for a perfect weekend adventure, look no further than Emerald Village!
Emerald Village has plenty of attractions to spend the day with, but this post is going to highlight the Flume (also known as the Gemstone Mine). Before you even start gem mining you can see one of the 12 mines on the property, this mine is called the Big Deal Mine! Deciding on which bucket you want to do can be difficult since Emerald Village has plenty of sizes and specialty buckets to choose from, all the buckets are filled with material from the tailings of the old mines, we guarantee you will find some amazing gems and minerals depending on which bucket you choose.
The Flume also has a gift shop called the Cab shop which has some unique things for sale, but the main thing we offer in the Cab Shop is Custom Cabochon cuts from the gemstones you find, we can also put the gemstone into a wide range on Sterling Silver settings! We have two dedicated rooms that are incredible—one filled with massive specimens, and another showcasing beautiful local Hyalite Opal.

What if you could step inside a hidden world of glowing, underground fluorescence?
If you’re looking for something truly out of the ordinary this weekend, we are doing our first Blacklight Mine tour at Emerald Village in Little Switzerland, NC. This Saturday night, May 23rd at 9:15 PM.

For 45 minutes, you’ll get to witness rare minerals burst into a brilliant, colorful display of underground splendor that you can’t see anywhere else. It’s a photographer’s dream, so definitely bring your camera! Spots are limited for the season opener and sell out really fast. But the fun does not have to start at night, we have plenty of unique attractions to do in the day time, why not check out the Mining Museum, you can purchase admission to access the 2 levels of interesting displays, you can also walk down the ramp to the lower level of the museum and watch a brief video of Emerald Village. Then you can walk outside of the lower level and check out a stunning waterfall and walk inside the Bon Ami mine which is the same mine we do our Black Light mine tours!
