On behalf of myself and my staff, I want to wish you a joyous and happy New Year. Due to term limits, our last day in office is December 31st. It has been a privilege to serve as your Council Member for the 27th Council District for the past eight years. Our measure of success has always been to leave the district better than we found it, and I hope you'll agree that we did just that. Beginning on January 1st, Council Member Nantasha Williams will take office, and her team can be reached at that time by visiting: https://council.nyc.gov/districts/.

We've made great strides in supporting housing, transportation, and education in particular, and we've celebrated some key victories in new transportation access, funding for schools in the district, and ensuring homeowners and renters are supported and have a chance to attain and maintain upward mobility.

I want to take a moment to thank all of the many volunteers and interns that have worked with us throughout the years, as well as present and former staff. Their service is what has allowed us to accomplish this great work, and I am grateful to have led such an amazing team.

While this journey may be over for now, there's still much work to be done, and I look forward to what the next chapter will bring. In the meantime, I'm sure you'll be seeing me around the district.

So excited for the dramatic changes at Roy Wilkins Park - we worked hard with our colleagues to make sure that the NYC Parks Department took over the maintenance of the park and funding was allocated for full-time staff. With these changes, SQPA can continue to provide human and social services to the Southeast Queens community without interruption!

Read more about our efforts in QNS:

“There’s been a perception that because Roy Wilkins Park has not always met expectations aesthetically that it is SQPA dropping the ball, which could not be further from the truth,” Miller said. “SQPA has done incredible things for the community in terms of human and social services and educational programs but has also been limited by the responsibility of maintaining the park. With this baselined funding for permanent, full-time Parks staff, we are not only creating new family-supporting jobs but also ensuring that the proper care and attention can be given to the grounds.”

Thanks to an additional $1.63 million in funding, Parks will hire the full-time and seasonal staff to provide maintenance, enforcement and programming to Roy Wilkins Park. The funding also includes vehicle and equipment purchases to meet the needs of both Operations and Parks Enforcement Patrol (PEP).

“There is real value in bringing on full-time staff, and we are grateful for the support of the city in getting this done and making it a budget priority for this fiscal year,” Miller said. “This is all in addition to the $92,000,000 in funding for a new recreation center and the numerous projects we’ve funded over the years to improve the park landscape and create flood mitigation tools.”

That funding allocated by Miller over the past eight years included improvements to the pond and other green investments.

From DSNY, get ready for Christmas tree collection:

It’s Almost Tree-cycling Time - “Best Smelling Collection Trucks in the City”

“Bare” Trees Only, Please – No Bags or Decorations!

The New York City Department of Sanitation has announced that Christmas tree collection will begin Thursday, January 6, 2022. Collection will run through Saturday, January 15, 2022, barring any delays that may be caused by snow events. As a reminder, Christmas trees are collected separately from trash and recycling, and patience is appreciated as pick-up may not occur immediately; trees are collected with other trees, and the Department scouts trees at the curb to make efficient routes.

Residents choosing to take advantage of curbside collection should remove all stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments before putting trees out for collection. Do NOT wrap trees in plastic bags. After collection, the Christmas trees will be chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions, and community gardens. The Department can collect more than 200,000 Christmas trees for ‘tree-cycling’ every year.
