What happens when kindergarten creativity meets middle school craftsmanship?
This spring, our middle school students participated in the Reading Monsters Project, where they learned basic sewing skills while bringing a kindergartener's imagination to life! Each kindergartener designed and drew a unique monster, and our middle school students carefully transformed those drawings into handmade stuffed animals.
Yesterday was the moment everyone had been waiting for, the middle school students delivered the finished monsters to their kindergarten designers! The smiles, excitement, and pride on both sides made all of the hard work worthwhile.
The project doesn't end here. Each kindergartener also received a special "reading monster" finger pointer to help them track words while reading. Over the summer, their new monster friend will serve as a reading buddy, encouraging them to practice their literacy skills and enjoy books together.
This wonderful collaboration combined creativity, sewing, problem-solving, mentorship, and reading—all while building connections between students of different ages. We are so proud of our middle school students for their hard work and craftsmanship, and of our kindergarteners for their incredible imaginations!
Happy summer reading, monsters!
