Exploring White Nationalism

The Catholic Racial Justice Collaborative, Pax Christi USA and the Institute for Peace and Justice invite you to a Webinar on Exploring White Nationalism Saturday, November 19, 2022 – 10:00am until 12-noon.

Rev. Joseph A. Brown, SJ, Ph.D. will lead the discussion. He is a priest, educator, scholar, artist and “drum major for justice.”
He received his Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University.
He is currently a professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Fr. Brown has also taught at the University of Virginia, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Creighton University. He frequently speaks and writes about African American literature, culture, and religious life.

White nationalism is a dangerous ideology that has seen an exponential rise in prevalence across the United States since 2017. The threat of white nationalism gained new attention after the insurrection on January 6, 2021, where many members of the mob attacking the US Capitol displayed white nationalist symbols and slogans.
Other recent attacks motivated by white nationalist ideology include the shootings in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas; in mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand; in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. White nationalist violence is not a new phenomenon, even if it is taking on new forms. In the United States, the 1979 Greensboro shootings, various attacks committed in the 1980s by “the Order,” and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, were all motivated by the white nationalist ideology.

Increasingly, white nationalists are targeting young people for recruitment online, and white nationalism has been linked to bullying, threats, and violence in schools. For these reasons, it is critical that we all understand what white nationalism is, why it is harmful and what we can do in opposition to it.

We feel deeply and pray earnestly for the people of Ukraine, as well as the people of Russia. We support the Russian people who are standing strong for peace, even when their protests are risky for them. And we support the Ukrainian people who have very difficult decisions to make in terms of their own safety and the future of their country. And we pray for the leaders of our country as they make difficult decisions

APOLOGIES TO OUR SUPPORTERS...apparently the Kirkwood Chipotle is understaffed this evening and taking ONLINE ORDERS ONLY. The Manager was apparently uninformed of our fundraiser (He was understandably frustrated, yet quite impolite). VERY DISAPPOINTING. They locked the doors about 5:30pm. We appreciate your patience if you're making the journey to help, and recommend ordering 30 minutes ahead of arrival if possible...again CHIPOTLE KIRKWOOD IS ACCEPTING ONLINE ORDERS ONLY.

2021 is already moving by quickly. We at IPJ hope this is a time where we can all bounce back from last year. Respect, compassion, and action is a must for helping those suffering in our global family. Let's stay focused on what's important and demand positive change and accountability from our leaders, and practice the same ourselves. There is still much work to do in our world. Peace and Justice remain a work in progress.
