SPEEDING VEHICLES 🏎️🏎️🏎️

Neighbors have discussed similar issues of speeding in our communities.

Traffic calming is about designing safer streets and not simply installing speed humps and telling drivers to slow down.

Baltimore County’s Office of the Inspector General found that the County’s Traffic Calming Unit wasted $125,513.89 through errors and policy violations. Projects included a raised crosswalk installed at the wrong location, another installed and removed from a state-owned road, and traffic-calming devices placed on streets that did not qualify under the County’s own rules. The OIG also identified inadequate oversight, incomplete records, accessibility concerns and a potential conflict of interest. Baltimore County OIG Report 25-012:

I bring relevant experience to this issue. I served on a Complete Streets advisory team, purchased rights-of-way for accessible sidewalks and helped direct traffic studies. I understand that roadway ownership, engineering, drainage, pedestrian access, ADA requirements and community needs must be evaluated before construction begins.

Baltimore County should:

* Follow published eligibility and engineering standards.
* Apply Federal Highway Administration guidance for roadway speed humps, signs and pavement markings.
* Conduct ADA reviews before approving construction.
* Verify roadway ownership and available rights-of-way.
* Obtain required property-owner consent.
* Document decisions and publish project results.
* Provide active supervision and independent inspection.
* Review projects for conflicts of interest.

As your councilwoman, I will follow up on the OIG’s recommendations and demand transparent reporting from the Department of Public Works and Transportation. No community should have to wait for a serious injury to get a safe, accessible street.

♿️🧑🏼‍🦼‍➡️👩🏻‍🦼‍➡️Accessibility Is…
Public Safety👮🏽⚖️

I first corresponded with a couple in a social media group. Yesterday, I met them in person in Middle River. They navigate our inaccessible sidewalks using scooters. When they travel farther from home, they rely on other mobility and transportation options.

That conversation stayed with me.

This morning, I heard a dispatch call involving an alleged incident of sexual assault in Essex between an MTA driver and a person with a cognitive disability.

These are allegations. A dispatch call is not a finding of guilt, and everyone deserves due process.

But it reminds me why accessibility and public safety cannot be treated as separate issues.

People with disabilities should be able to navigate our sidewalks, use public transportation, travel through their communities, and get home safely.

Through my work with the MTA as the city’s ADA Coordinator, I also understand that transit systems use technology and vehicle-tracking information that may assist in determining where vehicles were at particular times.

I promise to work closely with our law enforcement partners including future State’s Attorney Sarah David for Baltimore County State's Attorney to make our communities safer for everyone.

That means championing accountability when the evidence supports it, due process for those accused, and ensuring people with disabilities are heard and treated with dignity.

Public safety must include accessibility. I know we are safer with Sarah and me a person who has specific subject matter expertise working with law enforcement; working with and for departments of transportation. I helped develop policies not just complaints.
