This Spring the Forestry Division planted more than 200 trees across the 5th Ward. The plantings were funded by ward capital funds. We invested just under $50,000 in the project and will do the same next year.
These trees need your help. If you have a street-tree growing in front of your house, please water it with five to 10 gallons of water each week from April through October the first three years after it's planted. Water slowly, right at the base of the tree. Provide five gallons to the tree each time you water it. The City does not water these trees, so their survival depends on residents to take care of them.
Weekly watering is essential for your tree's survival, and we need these trees to survive. The benefits for humans and wildlife are numerous. The trees provide shade, help with storm water run-off, pull water into our aquifers, and provide habitat and food for our wildlife.
The black tree guard on your tree protects against weed-eater and lawn-mower damage. The black bag helps absorb water during rains, and then slowly releases back into the ground to help water the tree. Thank you!
