Fall 2026 CommuniTree applications are now open!Forest ReLeaf offers over 50+ species for public planting across the state. Today we are spotlighting Deciduous Holly (Ilex decidua). Also known as Possum Haw, this is a native shrub that is a showy ornamental and it attracts many birds and other wildlife. It prefers dolomite glades, rocky upland open woods, fencerows, borders of upland and lowland ponds, swamps, sloughs, valleys, and low, wet woods along streams.

Still smiling from Forest ReLeaf’s very first Treesilience Celebration. 🌳✨

This weekend, we gathered at the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site to celebrate our Treesilience stakeholders, Tree Captains, contractors, partners, and community members who have helped this program grow.

There was ragtime music from Royce Martin, food, awards, beautiful conversations, a room full of tree friends, and a whole lot of joy.

One line from the welcome says it best: “The deeper story is trust, participation, stewardship, and community power.”

Thank you to every stakeholder who continues showing up for tree equity in St. Louis, and to MDC, USDA, the Department of Natural Resources via the Scott Joplin House, , our contractors, partners, and the Forest ReLeaf team for helping make the day so special.

Forest ReLeaf's ForestKeepers Network is supporting our State Nursery's Seed Collection.
This local seed collection uses the seeds to grow bare root native tree and shrub seedlings to use for reforestation, erosion control, wildlife food, and stream bank stabilization.

Fall 2026 CommuniTree applications are now open! We offer 50+ species for public plantings, and today we are spotlighting Hackberry Tree (Celtis occidentalis). They occur in moist woodlands, in bottomlands, and in uplands, nearly statewide. Although hackberry prefers moist bottom soil situations, it will grow on any moist, fertile area. Notably, plantings of it are used to form windbreaks. Their leaves turn yellow in fall and are some of the first trees to start showing fall color. Look for them in low areas along streams in the second half of September.
