General information

The Maryville University Library, a 47,167-square foot facility, houses the library collection and services. The library, built in 1988, received a facelift in the summer of 2007. The library installed an information commons, which provided approximately 40 computers for student use. An important part of the renovation was to create collaborative learning spaces for students. The new information commons area has smoked glass between individual seats and tables creating five group study areas and 42 individual desks with desktop computers. These areas are in addition to four newly decorated group study rooms, four lounge areas with comfortable sofas, chairs and ottomans, new library tables and chairs and movable chairs, which contain tablet arms for laptop use. A Kaldi coffeehouse in the foyer of the library opened in the spring 2008 semester. The Information Commons on the first floor contains two large tables and three smaller table for group study. The library, also, has four fully enclosed group study rooms along the far (west) wall of both floors, and two partially enclosed rooms in the public workstation areas. Two of the group study rooms on the first floor and the two partially enclosed rooms in the public workstation areas are all equipment with 40" monitors. Individuals may use these rooms only if no group needs a room. If you are part of a group and an individual refuses to yield a room to you, please bring this matter to the attention of the circulation staff or a reference librarian immediately. The second floor houses the Circulating Collection, the University Archives and the Teaching Materials Center, composed of the Pepper Coil Curriculum Collection, and the Juvenile Literature Collection. Two group study rooms are also located on this level as well as the Library's administrative offices. The Faust staircase and elevator provide access to the second floor. Numerous pieces of sculpture from the Morton J. May collection are located throughout the library. Statues near the staircase are the work of Adolph Weinman, who created them for the 1919 World's Fair. John Wickersham, professor of philosophy, produced the photographic collage of churches. Professor Emeritus Rodney Winfield created the painting, For Those Who Love Books, on the second floor. Professor Emeritus Kent Addison created two sculptures Jonah and the Whale, located at the Circulation Desk, and the child holding a jumping rope near the juvenile literature collection. One of his classes created the colorful collage hanging on the wall in the Teaching Materials Center.
