Reduce water pollution from your pool and spas this summer ✌🏼👙🤿

When you're enjoying your pool and spas at home this summer, if you have one, be sure to keep the following in mind:

🐠Discharge of chlorinated water from pools, even in low concentrations, to a storm sewer or nearby creek can kill fish and other aquatic life.

👀Chlorinated water should be disposed of properly so it does not enter storm sewers or surface waters.

❗️Only drain residential pool or spa chlorinated water to stormwater when a test kit does not detect chlorine levels and only if approved by your local municipality.

💧Properly store pool and spa chemicals to prevent leaks and spills.

Summer is on the horizon! As we continue to wake up our gardens for the remainder of this warm season, many people have a habit of applying fertilizers in hopes of prosperous growth, but that extra nitrogen and phosphorus cause hazards in our water ways—including the Gulf!

The hypoxic zone measurements for 2025 were released and cover currently 4,402 square miles (roughly the size of Connecticut). A hypoxic zone, or "dead zone," is an area in a body of water where dissolved oxygen levels are too low to sustain most marine life.

While this hypoxic zone is smaller than in recent years, it’s still more than double the 1,900 square mile goal set by the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force.
