Community Response Saint Louis Could you have assumed all the responsibilities of adulthood when you were 18 or even 20 years old? This is what society asks of foster youth.

We strive to end homeless among exiting and former foster youth, Military Veterans and single parent head of households by providing housing, case management and comprehensive life skills training. Each year hundreds of young people exit Missouri’s foster care system unprepared to tackle adulthood. More than half become homeless or transient within a few years; joining the ranks of thousands in th

e St. Louis Area that find themselves without stable homes annually. Community Response provides evidence-based and replicable interventions that reduce homelessness among exiting and former foster youth, ages 17-24, in St. Louis City and County. These efforts are punctuated by a desire to offer peace of mind, focus and support – in that order. In eleven years we have helped over 200 foster youth transition into adulthood. Our independent living program provides up to three years of housing, case management and 24-hour support. In return, participants agree to pursue education and/or employment goals and engage in substantive life skills training and counseling.

Often we forget about the stories and traumas of the foster youth that are represented in our community. The stories of the youth may not affect us as much because maybe the foster care system isn’t something you are impacted by. But I want to petition you to think of something you are impacted by that has completely shaped or changed you or someone you love and how a meaningful relationship positively influenced the situation or outcome: depression, anxiety , motherlessness, fatherlessness, abuse.

Well oftentimes foster youth have been impacted by all of the above and more by elementary age and sometimes younger. Think about how your heart to come along side a youth who’s experienced a fraction of these hardships in their life can be changed for the better.

Community Response Saint Louis is in full stride with our transitional housing program. 10 foster youth and counting. We provide a fully furnished apartment, life/household management instruction, home visits and case management support with the goal of preparing foster youth to successfully live on their own when they “age out” of foster care at age 21. Below is one of apartments just before move in.

On 10/29, Community Response created ANOTHER first time homeowner. We acquired, rehabilitated and sold a previously abandoned two bedroom townhouse in Kirkwood, Missouri to a recently married couple. We are excited to continue our mission of promoting the many benefits of homeownership, while strengthening communities.
