Today we commemorate Juneteenth — a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the fight for equality. ✊🏾

F.I.R.E. was built from that same spirit of resistance and resilience. Read how we carry the legacy forward in the fire service. ⬇️

On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed—enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks this delayed but powerful moment of liberation.

18 St. Louis area firefighters. 6 proud F.I.R.E members. 1 unforgettable experience.

This June, our brothers and sisters traveled to New Orleans to attend the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute (EDI)—a nationally respected leadership program built by us, for us.

What they brought back? Legacy. Leadership. A renewed sense of purpose.

In the wake of the devastating tornado that struck North St. Louis, members of the Firefighters Institute for Racial Equality (F.I.R.E.) came together—not in uniform, but in unity.

Off duty but deeply committed, our members joined residents on the ground to help clear debris, remove fallen trees, and board up damaged homes. These efforts aren’t just about cleanup—they are about care. About making sure no one feels forgotten. About standing with our neighbors to help rebuild—because these aren’t just any neighborhoods. These are OUR neighborhoods.

We are incredibly grateful to every volunteer, homeowner, and partner who has stepped forward in this moment. Recovery is a long road, but St. Louis is strong—and when we move together, we rise together.

If you or someone you know needs support, or if you’d like to help, we invite you to reach out. Every hand, every hour, and every gesture of compassion makes a difference.
